Windowblinds 5.5 Preview Guide

Object Desktop

For you Objectdesktop Subscribers:

Version 5.5 of WindowBlinds has been designed to enable Windows Vista to become skinnable. This is no easy task for a number of reasons. The biggest reason has to do with the new Desktop Window Manager (DWM). While technically WindowBlinds could have hacked its way to work on Vista, it was important that WindowBlinds work natively on Vista and that means using the new 3D composited desktop. By using the DWM you get hardware acceleration and a ton of other possible effects.

The second challenge was making visual styles (skins) made for Windows XP work on Windows Vista without parts missing. So Stardock developed "Smart Skinning" in which graphical elements in XP skins are translated to take care of new parts in Windows Vista.

Its only available for the 32bit version of Vista it seems.. Too bad I don't have a RTM build to test this out..

Come on MSDNAA, I want Vista...

These are the release notes for the beta ..

WB 5.49 beta

-----------------

This beta build is 32-bit only. Please reboot after installation of the beta, though that should just be a beta limitation atm. System information for the 32-bit XP build will report itself as WindowBlinds version : WindowBlinds 5 (5.1 (build 81 x86)) , we haven't changed its version string yet.

-Added support for Windows Vista. RC2 and RTM builds should work, but it is likely any pre-RC2 build will be unhappy. Windows Vista Starter Edition is not supported, but all others should be functional (including per-pixel support on Windows Vista Home Basic with WDDM drivers).

-Added enhanced user interface for XP and Vista

-Added blur transitions on skin changes

-Fixed Corel X13 jumping

-Fixed IE7 tab text painting to paint in a better color (for some skins)

-Fixed hourly changing of wallpapers

-You must have WDDM drivers for your video card on Vista for this build to work.

-We know about the black text background with IE7 password prompts. There's also a missing arrow image somewhere, see if you can find it! :)

This a good enough screenshot? :D

Loving this, although, I've found some explorer bugs, but I guess that's what you get when you run a skin designed for XP and not vista. I'm sure it will only take a little bit of fixing up in SS to get this up in running. By the way, when I logged in, it said 5.49.020, but when it installed, it was 5.5 Beta for Vista, and didn't even require a restart to work. Hope this helps the few that were confused about the build number.

"Vista" Vectra, heh. Love how that sounds. Anyway, enjoy the screenshot. I've been itching to try out Vectra on vista, ever since Frogboy posted about this last week. Now it's time. My favorite theme on XP, now on Vista!
