RocketDock v1.0

Question

RocketDock v1.0.1

A new application launcher has come to contend with the already popular ObjectDock, Y'z Dock, andMobyDock. Punk! Software has released the first official version of RocketDock.

RocketDock-Bottom.png

RocketDock is a smoothly animated, alpha-blended application launcher that is similar to Y'z Dock. RocketDock renders quickly like MobyDock, has the visual sharpness of AquaDock, and the stability that neither seem to possess.

It is compatible with every dock skin format we are aware of. In fact, if you have a skin that doesn't load properly, send it to us, along with a screenshot of what it should look like and we'll see what we can do about integrating the format...

Features:

  • Runs smooth on slower computers
  • Alpha-blended PNG icons
  • Fully customizable
  • True multi-monitor support
  • Simple drag-n-drop interface
  • Compatible with Y'z Dock, Mobydock, ObjectDock, and AquaDock skins

You can downlaod it at Punk! Software.

Changelog:

v1.0.1 (20/6/2005)

  • Fixed CPU draining when moving the mouse
  • Fixed bug preventing real-time preview of some options
  • Fixed missing scrollbars on Icon Folder-View
  • Added AstroLife Skin
  • Replaced foood icons with PSW icons

Ok nice piece of software. Seems very fast. 6.5mbs of ram. I dont mind that there are no docklets but it would be nice in future releases. I will recommend to others.

well I was going to try it, but the site doesn't load for me.

edit: got it. Whoa, it's smooth as hell. RK Dock now has some real competition.

Can you make it not be an abomination ?

Docks are an abomination of UI design and are totally worthless.

Congratulations for adding to this mess.

I find docks mroe useful than anything else. I have no icons on my desktop which makes it look nice and clean. Bring my mouse to the bottom of the screen and my important shortcuts automatically popup temporarily. It works nicely and looks good.

As for rocketdock, my only complaint is the random cpu useage even when not being hovered over. I sat with task manager open and watched rocketlauncher just use random cpu cycles for god knows what, sometimes going as high as 10%.

I really do not know what this comment means. How are any of the an abomination of UI design. If you dont like any don't use them. For many they are useful.

How should the UI be improved. Give some suggestions. Personally I think this is the smoothest of the docks. I do not include Ydock since it is not available or actively being updated.

wow awsome

I've just tried it and I'll keep it a couple of days to see the memory usage

that could be the first one to make me leave yzdock!

edit: hmm found the first bug. When you have too many folders in the icons folder to sort all your png files, there is no vertical scrollbar to see all folders..

Checking all the bugs mentioned right now. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Docklet support is a future feature but we desided to have a different focus with RocketDock. We wanted a stable dock you could rely on that was still fashionable before adding features that could make it more sloppy. RcoketDock will probably have its own docklet system rather than utalizing Y'z docklets due to the way RocketDock was designed. Future support for y'z docklets is in mind.

My hosting is having some slight issues. The site is back up for me but it might be down for others. Just keep trying. I have been told they are working on the issue now. :) One to tell if the site is working (as it always should) is if my sig doesn't show up then we have an issue.

Interesting...

Here's my first impressions on this lovely piece of software.

The icon label could be more configurable. As of right now, you can change the font, size, weight and style, but you have no control over the stroke or shadow. If you use a size smaller than the default, the labels become almost unreadable. I've toggled the labels off for now until this is taken care of in a future release.

Another thing I would like to see in a future update is to have the dock automatically update itself when a setting is changed. It's a bit annoying to have to click OK to see the changes you make to the dock from the dock settings dialog.

Docklet support would be nice, but at least for me, isn't a necessity. It's actually good that you released a stable build of RocketDock with basic functionality before anything else. (Y)

I must say I am very impressed. It is very smooth and the default theme is pretty unique. Nice idea to add support for other dock's skinning systems. Makes it easier to skin instead of having to port other dock's themes. I'm going to be using this for a bit and I will definetly follow the development on this. (Y)

Don't add docklets if you feel it will slow down the software or make it more wieldy, personally I like this app because it runs fast, and doesn't seem to take too many resources, a dock shouldn't bog down your system.

One request for all docks. PLEASE DISABLE WHEN IN DX3D Mode. Nothing worse than starting up CS and playing and having the dock pop up mid game and drop ur fps down to 12

:) I am glad everyone is enjoying RocketDock.

The Folder view in the icon settings missing scrollbar has been fixed for the next release. That was a missing flag in teh code, not a big deal just got overlooked somehow. :) Thanks for those who noticed.

New features will come along. But like I have said before we are more focused on stability rather than bloated features. When docklets and process management is fully implenented with the least amont of resources possible it will be releaed. Honestly this dock was created for our own purpose first. So we wanted to give everyone something the other docks lacked. Hopefully we will turn some heads and hearts as development continues. This project is by no means going to be abandoned easily since it is a project we enjoy making.
