downtheory
This may not be the correct section to post this in, but I figured since it involves CS:S that it belongs here. Move this topic to the correct section if you have to, and I apologize in advance :). Now thats out of the way. I`ve been playing alot of CSS at a relative`s house and I`m getting really good now, mostly play on XfactorGaming`s deathmatch server, but getting better nonetheless. And I want to FINALLY be able to play from home instead of wasting gas to go to someone`s house just so I can play :). I was curious, would I be able to play online with: Sprint Mobile Broadband Solutions Sprint Review @ DSL Reports Does anybody have this service? And most importantly despite the 100-150 m/s lag this service may get, will I be able to play online? I`m going to get this because it`s my only other alternative. Satellite internet is way overpriced and un-reliable not to mention that they have that FAP policy in place, and I can not get DSL or cable in my area. This will be connected either to my laptop or pc computer and then ran through my LinkSys wireless router for the rest of the computers in my house. Was just curious is all. Hope someone can help me out. And I apologize again if this is in the wrong section. Thank you. Dashel
Will still be high latency which hurts gaming. Anything under 150ms is playable imo, but you will feel it. downtheory
Yeah I figured as much, thanks for replying. Is there a way to maybe mod my connection to fix that? I`m hearing that with this service, the USB modem it comes with, can be modified to get up to a 2 mb/s connection. At this point anything is better than 45.5kb/s dial-up internet :D. Or would there be like a console command I could type in CS-S to maybe make it a little more playable? Yes, I`m a noob at CounterStrike, been playing for four years, but don`t know everything about it strangely :). This pretty much outlines it. http://www.fishtankclan.com/e107_plugins/c....php?content.44 I usually only go to a server if it's ~40 or less. 100 is pretty bad imo but Dashel seems to find it okay so I guess it's down to the individual. jokeripa
Hacking your modem is pretty damn illegal and you'll get caught pretty easily. I'd advise against that idea... The_Decryptor Veteran Posted January 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted January 18, 2008 You won't be able to enter a command in the console which would move the systems closer together. 150ms might be ok (I've played online on servers with a latency of 350ms, it was ok), but the lower the better. Thanks for the article. Can`t read it at the moment, have a 7mb file upping to deviantart (still on dial-up), but I`ll check it out as soon as I can. Hacking your modem is pretty damn illegal and you'll get caught pretty easily. I'd advise against that idea... Yeah I don`t think that I`ll be hacking the modem. To be honest I had no clue that was really illegal, at least concerning the modem this ISP has. I just saw where this guy on one of those review sites had done it, but he said he worked for Sprint or something...anyway I`ll be a happy camper with a 1 - 1.2 mb/s internet connection :). You`re right The_Decryptor it is personal preference. Honestly I`ve played with a 150ms ping before and that was on a 8mb DSL connection, but it played alright for a while, until I got kicked from the server. Either way it wasn`t that bad though. Oh and thanks for that info concerning the ping. I didn`t know the connection would be better the lower I go with the ping. Always thought it was the other way around. bl4ck5un
Too technical, anything above 1MB is epic win for CS! Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/614177-counter-strike-source-new-isp/#findComment-589146453 Share on other sites
Code.Red
Too technical, anything above 1MB is epic win for CS! Except this is satellite internet, so the latency times would be a lot higher than any 1MB DSL connection. Like others have said, 100-150 ms latency shouldn't be too bad. Guest
Well it sounds like you're just having some fun with CS: S and not really playing competitively, so I doubt you'd care too much about the lag so go for it (Y). downtheory
Thanks for all the help everyone. I`m going to subscribe sometime next week. So now maybe I`ll be able to surf the net and play online like everyone else :). For me this is a better alternative to satellite internet... Veritas 1
Thanks for all the help everyone. I`m going to subscribe sometime next week. So now maybe I`ll be able to surf the net and play online like everyone else :). For me this is a better alternative to satellite internet... I work for a cell phone company. That sprint card will work everywhere you get sprint cell service. However, you will only get the high speed a.k.a. 3g coverage in certain areas. Being as though you still have dial up I would think you'll prolly be out of that area, as right now 3g is only starting to move out of major metropolitan areas. Check a coverage map before you buy a 2yr contract, which they will make you sign. With out 3g coverage its only slightly better then dial up with more latency. downtheory
I might still be in the signal coverage area. My neighbors about 1 or 2 miles out from me have cable and the option to get dsl. They get 11mb/s connections with the cable last I checked. The local phone companies around here keep saying they are going to extend lines out in this area, but they have been saying that for over 7 years now. My only other option is to get everyone around here to sign a petition for cable and dsl services, but who knows if that will do any good. Haha it makes a person want to give up on it altogether sometimes... Thanks for the info Veritas 1. Will definitely check into everything before being locked into a contract. +InsaneNutter MVC Posted January 24, 2008 MVC Share Posted January 24, 2008 If you have a 3g phone you could get a pay and go simcard and see if you get 3g signal in your house, you might need to be near a window. My friend recently got one of this as he was fed up of slower than dialup speed internet in the student halls, I?ve gotta say I was impress with them despite the 150+ ping he can still play Halo 3 and Gears great over Xbox Live.
