Need to Customize My Vista Desktop

Recommended Posts

Hello guys...

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit Desktop PC.

Frankly... I am bored of the theme and the look, appereance and functionality of my desktop.

I would like to change it around...

Now what do I need to change it around and how shall I change it around?

Give me some ideas guys...

Thanks

Crazysah

well i use both windows blinds and object dock from http://stardock.com/. those two change the functionality greatly

there are of course free programs like samurize, uxtheme, etc. but i find the stardock programs are totally worth the price. they are really popular so there's lots of themes and such for them

Careful with windowblinds - it eats up resources and even the lastest version (6 right?) has a lot of compatability problems with full screen applications. That and most of the decent themes require you to pay for them.

You have a couple of options, depending on how and what exactly you want to change. You can use a theme hack, but most themes are limited to just Aero clones, or you can use WindowBlinds which is much more flexible.

I wrote a Vista customization guide that lists several way to change your Vista Desktop.

The WindowBlinds and resource issue is a dead horse that has been beaten enough. Resource consumption is a thing of past, and I'm not sure what full screen applications have these "problems".

"A minor resource hogging effect was one of the chief complaints with WindowBlinds 5.x. We ran several performance tests, both synthetic, gaming, and real-world encoding and rendering tests, with and without WindowBlinds 6 installed, and the results of each test were so close to identical that we're not even going to bother running charts. To do so would be an exercise in redundancy."

not even close

it doesn't have any performance hit at all, has no compatibility problems that i've run across (and i play a lot of pc games) and of course there are a ton of skins that are "decent" that are free (but that's personal preference)

please don't go around stating false stuff. they are very good programs and don't deserve it

Not my experience at all. The WB program was using around 35-40mb of ram at all times. It caused Football Manager 2008 to crash, as well as a couple of other games that I played, C&C generals was one, and i think FlatOut was the other. That's three games that at the time i played regularly, so obviously it was enough for me to uninstall it.

Oh Please!! I use windowblinds on vista home premium and have none of the issues you refer to. My cpu usage stays between 2 and 7% and with 2gb of memory I only see about 30 to 40% of it being used unless I'm playing bf2.

So just because it doesn't crash one game you assume what im saying is rubbish?

Clever guy you must be.

Do you see somewhere in my post where i said it made my system less responsive? did you? anywhere?

Clever, clever guy. You must have had a good education :D

So just because you say it eats up resources and make applications crash, then it's a fact and not a reply based on your own personal experience with the program?

You're talking rubbish when you write it in way so it seems like it's a bunch of problems everybody have had (will have) when they use(d) windowblinds.

At least use your head when you're trying to insult someone, especially when MHA never wrote anything about the responsiveness of the system, but about the cpu and mem usage = resources ;)

That is totally a false statement. Windowblinds use exactly zero resources now and is extremely stable. I dont want to say you are lying, but if you are using the latest build and saying its using 35-40 mb then, Im sorry, but thats an outright lie.

How come ppl ALWAYS start fighting about windowblinds?

It's like war between religions, and after all it's all about some computer software

My advice is to try windowblinds and then decide on your own do you like it or not.

I've been using windowblinds for many years, and before I thought it was quite rubbish (but still I used it, because of the themes etc) but nowadays there's no difference at all if you're using windows default theme or windowblinds.

But that's just my two cents.

First off please look at peoples profiles I'm a female, secondly, please don't insult me as I never said anything to inusult you or give you cause to talk to me in that manner.

And I'm assuming what your saying is rubbish based on the ton's of games I play and applications I use on this system not just one. Besides Battlefield 2 this also includes, Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2, Zoo Tycoon 2, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, SIMS, SIMS 2, Guild Wars, Empire Earth, Empire Earth II, Age of Empires, Age of Empires II, Age of Empires III, Age of Mythology, Doom 3, COD4, Resident Evil 4, Sniper Elite, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, as well as Many gamehouse and popcap games.

I also based my opinion on the many applications I use on my system.

But as applejuice said please feel free to install the demo of windowblinds on your own system and give it a try, that is the best way to decide whether it's for you or not.

Hello guys...

I don't want to use WB! I don't like that program!

All I would want is like a dashboard and some dock and maybe some other nice applications...

Also maybe some suggestions for widgets?

I would like all freeware programs only!

It was Version 6, when it was first released, under Windows XP.

So you're bagging a product based on it's FIRST RELEASE behavior?

Don't make me laugh

Yahoo Widgets have some great stuff: http://widgets.yahoo.com/

Or you could try the ones (Gadgets) made for Vista here: http://vista.gallery.microsoft.com/vista/S....aspx?mkt=en-us

Yeah thanks for that! What about a dashboard?

Also... is there any other applications that you recommend? Or any programs?
