Xbox One: Microsoft, publishers 'to profit from used game sales' R

Recommended Posts

Xbox One's used games process has been unveiled in a new report.

Sources from key retailers have told MCV that they must agree with Microsoft's terms and conditions and use a new pre-owned system in order to re-sell games.

Stores such as GAME are expected to be affected by the new system.

Games traded into a store will be entered into the system, wiping it from the consumer's account, which is reportedly why Xbox One consoles must connect to the internet every 24 hours.

While the retailer can then sell the game at a price of their choosing, the publisher and Microsoft will take a percentage of the second-hand sale.

A further report by ConsoleDeals suggests the cut for retailers would be as low as 10%, as opposed to profiting from the entire sale in the existing unregulated system.

Those who wish to use a second-hand game outside the system - like borrowing a game from a friend - will be charged a fee of ?35, added the source.

"We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we've confirmed," read a comment by Microsoft to the story.

"While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

"Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios. Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend's house ? should you choose to play your game at your friend's house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile."

An early report said that there will be a fee to play used games, but Microsoft has since said that polices are yet to be set in stone.

Oh dear. Pure money grab, nothing more. Can't sell games privately anymore and you cant lend games to people.

Game rentals are dead if you have to pay a ?35 fee to be able to use a disk that hasn't been traded in by this system.

Too many conflicting reports, id just wait til E3 to get the info every news outlet is saying something different, and its driving me up the wall. Speaking of which the friend borrowing thing, if this happens than you dont need a fee

Account 1(You) and Account 2 (Friend)

Account 1 buys Forza 5, you activate it, install it, and you get your license for it, and you play it. Then after a month you take a break, and you give it to Account 2 to try.

Account 2 will get a message saying this game is activate on accounts 1 profile, would you like to activate it on your profile and deactivate on account 1. Account 2 presses yes.

Account 1 can not play the game until he buys a license or reactivates it on his profile.

Account 2 finishes the game, and gives it back to account 1, and account 1 activates it on his profile again, and thats it, account 1 will have his game back activated with no fee paid and account 2 played the game.

I find this possible because if Gamestop can remove your license by scanning surely your friend borrowing it can do the same and then return the license back. That makes more sense. Hopefully anyway. Id just wait till E3. This could turn out completely false or completely true, no one knows yet, and everyone is saying something different.

No, videogame retailers will have to log into Microsofts system and input the code to unlink it from the account associated with it and only then if they get paid for it. I VERY much doubt they will allow a private user access to this system.

I didnt mean a private person using the system i mean a user logging onto his XboxOne and removing the license from there. Like i said Account 2 will get a notification saying this game is activated on account 1 profile deactivate or pay fee. Obviously if account 1 is done with the game, just deactivate and play the game, then give it back to account 1 and he will activate it back to his profile.

You might bend over and take it from this kind of anti-consumer racket but I wont and I don't think the EU will either.

You really think PS4 will be any different? Highly Doubtful, remember is this happens, Devs are gonna go to XboxOne, because they wont lose money, while PS4 will be sitting with their own Devs, Microsoft will get top devs to create things for xboxone solely because of used game sales wont lose them money. PS4 wont let that happen, you cant let your competitor create a console that will save money for Devs and Publishers while yours makes them lose it. Thats a recipe for disaster.

PS4 probably will be but Sony aren't talking about that yet, Microsoft are hence why it's blowing up around the internet, Neogaf has a 30odd page thread on the subject.

I was going to get both, I wont be getting the Xbox One and if Sony do it I wont be going next-gen at all.

This is a new business model, not based on the original game console business model and it's used to increase revenue.

The only think you can do is support it, or vote with your money and not purchase.

The problem I have is I like to play games years after the system gone and with this type of system, publishers by design or by virtue of age and defunct servers now have the ability to stop you from playing the game.

I'm personally voting for my money. If Ms, or Sony is going that route, The Wii U will be more most recent, and possible last console purchase.

I also feel the publishers have tried to brainwash people about how we're taking food from developers mouths when the reality is there business model as it's been evolving has been unsustainable and trying to force their business model on to consumers.

However, with gog.com, dotemu.com, kickstarter projects, the current system is not the only system.

The only reason this system is in place is so Microsoft gets a cut of the used sale, why would they let private sellers do this for free?

They arent private sellers, your borrowing a game, and then your giving it back, they stated there would be a solution for a person to borrow a game. They might even put a timer on it, how long do you need this game for a week two weeks, and then after two weeks or week the license automatically transfers back.

But REMEMBER this is all crazy headlines, and news where everyone is contradicting someone else, honestly save yourself the headache, just wait until E3 for Microsoft to explain it, because if they don't itll cause more of a problem than normal. If they do you will know how they handle things. An article stated you need to go online once every 24 hours, then xbox said not true. its difficult to say whose right or whose wrong lol. Save yourself the pain, relax and watch the fireworks :D

I am passionate about technology and gaming though, I enjoy talking about it but the only news coming out is negative news, I get painted as a fanboy for not praising Xbox One like its the second coming of christ.

LOL your not a fanboy you have every right to be concerned, I have every right to be concerned, its a pain. I love Xbox, its a fun console, I will get both, but i also wanna know whats going on with the XboxOne and if 20 different articles say 20 different things, than its best to just wait it out till june 10 lol :D

Microsoft are talking? where? If this is true, chances are both are talking to publishers/devs not only Microsoft.

good for you. whatever floats your boat. if this is the case then why are you even talking and posting about it?

Disagreeing with anti-consumer practices means you don't get to talk about it? Nice one.

because if everyone thought like you there would be no discussion on anything, other than praise and love for things you don't even know if you're actually going to be satisfied with?

The same holds true for the other side though.

Microsoft Silence, and vague references at reveal it's pretty clear the current status quo is changed from the 360 and used games.

If Sony does this, there will be a backlash as well.

?35 to borrow a game?? And they say pirates are thieves

It's not to borrow a game it's to BUY it. The rumor talks about you, taking your game disc into a shop, gamestop, and selling it to them. Gamestop can log into a custom system MS has and put in that you (using your gamertag probably) just sold your game off. This then means when you go back home and login to your account at some point the game you just sold which is already installed on your hdd fully, will stop playing because you just sold it and don't own it anymore.

Someone posted that the number isn't just the "fee" it's the cost of the full sale it sounds like. Which means when you buy a used game that's what you pay at gamestop.

The rumor says zero about barrowing games from people. It also doesn't say you can't barrow games from people. It just says what happens when you sell it off.

how do you think Microsoft is going to get all these exclusives? that's right, getting the publishers PAID. If Microsoft is actually doing this, and sony isn't, then Sony is in big trouble. Do you think Microsoft would go through all this trouble just to be nice to publishers? NO.

Sure some people might not like this, but if it means many big exclusive games, even if you hate it, you will punish yourself if you don't buy the console. for what? for some internet forum pride?

Somewhat agreed except for the Sony does this. There won't be as much backlash if Sony does it, certainly not on these forums.

I sincerely hope they don't block used games and private sales though. I won't shed a tear for Gamestop and the likes.

I must have got the wrong end of the stick...

Those exclusives wont matter much if the anti-consumer practices push people away from buying the platform in the first place.

    • I am not a fan of haptic feedback touchpads. I've owned a Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon) with one and a Lenovo Slim (Intel), and I hated both to the point where I purchased different laptops. It's not that they don't work most of the time; it's that they don't work 100% of the time, and there is no advantage from a user's perspective over a good mechanical trackpad like what's on a ThinkPad X1 or a Yoga 9i. I do not believe that I'll buy another haptic feedback touchpad laptop again in the near future.
    • Works fine here too. About this build, I don't like to download any kind of Windows, from any site except Microsoft. The mod might work, but I don't know what it's inside. Can contain malware, backdoors... Long time ago I've used something like this but reversed - it was 98se with the look and some functionality  of XP. Or, later XP with Vista look. But I made it myself. Not downloaded from obscure sites.
    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
