What drives to connect where.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Weird question that I am not even sure how to ask but here goes.

I have the Asus Sabertooth Z77 MB. It has 2 SATA Controllers an Intel Z77 Express and an Asmedia 1061. The Intel has 2 SATA 6Gb ports and 4 SATA 3Gb ports. The Asmedia has 2 SATA 6Gb ports and 2 eSATA 6Gb ports.

That said I have 3 SATA 6Gb drives with my 2 Samsung 840 Pro SSD's on the Intel 6Gb ports and my WD Black storage drive on an Intel 3Gb port. Is there any advantage to putting the WD Black drive on the higher speed port even though it's an Asmedia controller? This would dedicate the Intel controller to the 2 SSD's and potentially increase the throughput the WD Black drive supports. I didn't know if running the WD Black at the lower speed would effect any other drives on that controller. I have also read some bad things about using Asmedia SATA controllers at all such as poor driver support etc..

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I guess a shortened version of my question is, if I put my SATA 6Gb platter drive on the 3Gb channel with the 2 6Gb  SSD's will that effect the SSD's throughput. I only ask because I remember in days long past that if you put a drive on a slower port on the same controller it slowed down all the drives.

Thanks,

Hi,

Well I finally found a similar post that suggests I keep as many drives it will take on the Intel controller. Since the WD platter drive is for storage only speed is not a huge factor and just plugging ti into a slower port on the same controller will not effect the higher speed of the other ports.

Agreed?

Thanks,

if that WD Black is a SATA3 drive, i'd certainly use the ASMedia ports 6Gb/s port. The ASMedia controller is significantly slower than the Intel controller, but w/ a mechanical hd, the ASMedia should do just fine.

why dont you benchmark both setups?

Great idea! Now with my disability this is why I ask such questions. Those spontaneous ideas just never come to me anymore.
