Cool. But are people really ready to upgrade to HD-DVD this quickly? I know I'm not.

yes people who have HDTVs, alot of these studios will implement H.264 and Windows HD format , thats like crystal clear.

Ok, so I have 2 HDTV's (both 1080i, with with HDMI, one without, both have Component) To be able to play HD-DVD, what am I going to have to buy? Will regular DVD players with a component output and for the HDMI tv a HDMI output? Will I bet set to go with HD-DVD then?

HD-DVDs are releasing in Fall (september-october)

As far as I'm aware, when it was the Betamax vs VHS wars, Betamax (although better quality) lost out due to cheaper players and cheaper costs for the manufacturers didn't it?

From everything I've read so far isn't the HD-DVD standard small enough of a variation on the DVD standard that production costs are still cheap (and they can keep existing DVD fabs and convert them cheaply) yet still offer the HD benefits? It also seems to be the format of choice when it comes to windows, and the mass production of generic HD-DVD drives for PCs go a long way to bringing costs down in consumer players.

Yeah, you are right.

Blue Ray is going to get phased out. It doesn't seem like Sony is pulling the support that they need to get. Hollywood has made its choice. Now I will just need a HDTV to benefit from this :)

What? Hollywood is like half and half right now.

I wonder if these HD-DVDs will be more expensive than DVD? If so, forget it. The video game industry is already thinking of upping cost of games to $60, if HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray DVDs are up to $30, that's just an insane amount of money.

And personally, I don't see either format taking off like a rocket anytime soon, except maybe in PC hardware for storage. I know ALOT of people who are barely making the conversion from their VHS to DVD and to tell them "Hey, you should get HD-DVD because the picture is even MORE clearer!" Yeah, there's a real strong selling point

IMO i'm not paying for the same movies on dvd-hd that I already own on dvd...maybe when the players get down around a reasonable price I'll start buying new movies on hd or blu-ray, whichever finally wins this stupid format war.

You cannot play HD-DVDs on DVD players

who said you could?

hd dvd wont take off like dvd did in the 90s. mainly because most people see it as a luxury. only video connoisseurs will take delight in this new format until a couple of years later when hd tvs are mainly sold.
