I'm thinking of getting a laptop and buying a wireless router. Problem is I already have a Linksys router built into a control box that's in the wall (Has Internet, cable, security cameras, phones) and that router spreads the internet to 10/100 jacks in the wall, I was wondering if I could buy a wireless router that is a sub router. Right now I have a hub that splits my connection even further from the 10/100 wall jack, it's nothing special just a simple hub. But would a router work under another router?

I can't replace the router built into the wall unit (atleast not a wireless one).

R = (Wireless Router)

L = Laptop (Wireless)

Small display of how it would be set up. (Sorry if coding didn't allow a proper drawing)

Yes, It will work, if you want to NAt or re-nat to a seperate subnet, if you are re-nating though, port mapping is gonna get messy.

why not disable all nat / router features in the second router and have it as a switch / wireless acess point ?

OR, dont get a second router, just get a wireless acess point

It should work from everything that I know... What you may need to do is disable some of the routing in the "sub router" so that it's more of a wireless access point and that way it makes the whole network config a lot easier... but you should in theory be able to just use it at pretty much default settings and I would think it would work.

If you want to provide wireless access to your network you need an "access point" not a router.. But more likely than not - a full blown wireless router would be cheaper then just an access point.. But a router can be used as just an access point, or for that matter just as a wired switch, etc..

To answer your question directly - yes you can add a device to your connection to add ports.. be it a switch/hub, be it a access point, be it a router, etc..

yes.. an an access point is what you need.. just like BudMan said... a wireless router will work but an access point is what your looking for...

I'm fairly certain that it's possible (and most often cheaper) to use a regular wireless router and turn it into a WAP (Wireless Access Point) by disabling the routing features or, depending on the router itself, by putting it into some kind of switch or Access Point mode. So yes he needs something to act as an access point but no he doesn't need specifically an access point

Agreed. Disable DHCP and assign an IP address to the new router/access point BEFORE you hook it up to the network. Then it will work in behind your existing setup, and you'll be able to set up your wireless connection. My recommendation is Linksys. IMO they're the best.

this works perfectly as i have the exact setup you mentioned (just without the wall plugs).. infact i have three routers in my house, Linksys WRT54G (wireless - VERY good), the Linksys Vonage router, and an ADSL router. I disabled DHCP on both Linksyses, so the only thing doing DHCP is the ADSL router. Its kind of nice becuase you can access the settings to any of the other two routers, and everyone has the same IP address build...

But yeah, just get one to do the DHCP (preferably the router that it is directly connected to the modem).

(on a side note you have to plug the wire from the wall into the "internet" port on your new wireless router so that it, well, routes correctly...)

why not get:

internet->modem->wireless router-> 4 wired computers    (and as many wireless computers as you want (well up to 50-60))

his wired router is hardwired into the house already. He would have to take it out and replace it with the wireless. Chances are its in his basements attic or somewhere where the wireless singal wouldnt be all that great.

You also need to change the operating mode from Gateway to Router under Advanced Routing - if you're using linksys equipment.
