Flight Simulator X

Recommended Posts

I just got the latest PC Gamer mag in the mail today. There's a small article about some of the new things it'll have. Looks like it'll be released at around Feb. 2006. Some new features would be improved graphics, cars & trucks, ships, and AI vehicles at airports. It also will take advantage of DirectX 10 with new realistic lighting on planes.

Here's a scan...

Fantastic, I was waiting for this and to be honest I thought they had given up after "2004 Century of Flight"

One of the improvement they cite in their article is more AI traffic - good. I always thought there wasn't enough. Some airports like Heathrow have flights coming in every minute or two. I hope my PC can cope with it.

I was flying around london in a Cessna the other night, and there was lots of AI traffic, with all options maxed out. I had huge amounts of fun annoying another Cessna that was trying to land, cutting it up and lingering on the runway.

I'd like to see more private traffic, news / traffic / police helicopters buzzing around, more helipads on buildings, etc. Imagine if you could fly as an Air Ambulance, that'd be a much more interesting twist.

IMO, the only thing for MS to do with FS now is to add damage models. You can damage your plane, but you can't have an engine explode at 30,000 feet, then have to wrestle the plane back down to the ground with flames spewing from the engine. If they made it possible to damage the plane it would be much more entertaining.

If You want more traffic simply buy Traffic 2005 or Ultimate Traffic. I got Traffic 2005 and i simply love it. Look out for it in the sales in Game UK ;)

With Ultimate Traffic you can download new planes and timetables and stuff. The only problems with extra AI traffic IMO is you sometimes have to perform go arounds when you get to your destination airport, but there are ways to improve the go around amounts

why would you want damage on a flight simulator. it isnt an arcade game.

there is an option for damange hidden in the aircraft configuartion files but its pretty limited. Engines may fall off but its only hwne u hit a building or something else, do u see the plane break up into 5 pieces and some pathetic little flames are shown.

It was turned off not removed in 2000 after sep 11th iirc, but yeh it would be nice for more realism in that area. decompressions, engines flaming out (with the graphics to go with it). hydrolic failures that u can feel coming on etc. I have 2002 atm, but i'll definatly be checkin this out

Why wouldn't you want failure modelling, it's far more realistic, it means that pre-flight checks are actually important and not just someone taking things a little too far, and it's challenging.

This is very exciting. I was dissapointed when the expected 2006 release didn't come out in November as this has been how they have released since 98, I'm sure Xbox 360 caused some of this delay. I had heard that MS wasn't releasing a 2006 version so this is great news.

Already there. Many features I see people want, are included, but have not been discovered. You cant "plan" such an event, but they can happen. You need settings set to maximum realism for some to show up. Graphics set to the Max for them to show up, etc...

A few months ago, was flying from HI to LAX, and at 15,000 decending, my right engine caught fire. I set a box with spot plane in it so that I could watch it, as I headed down for an emergency landing. Was not yet into approach, when fire began spewing out of the engine. By the time I was lined up at the runway, at 5000 feet, it was really burning furiously.... At 2000 the engine exploded, maybe even the wing tank, and entire right wing went. Down I went in pieces.... If Id taken proper action, shutting down the engine, fuel, etc, it probably would not have exploded, and could have landed on one engine... But, wanted to see the full extent of the damage...

And if you want more GA traffic, download GA-Traffic, which is freeware.

95% of the time, I fly GA, landing at small fields, and depending on the size, Ive got 5-40 GA aircraft at all the fields where I am landing. You can take AFCAD, and add more gates, et. al. at your favorite ones. Like I call KFUL my home field, and have added parking for 100, with different sizes of GA aircraft - parking for 4 Helio's, and three Gates for small jets, Lear, Citation, etc.. With GA set to 100% on a busy saturday at KFUL, there is a landing or takeoff every minute from 10am-2pm... With Radar Control V4, which controls AI traffic, I can still takeoff and land without undue interferance.

With Radar Control v4, which controls AI, you dont have Jets overrunning you when landing, or other aircraft passing your GA, and forcing you to go around. No runway incursions of other aircraft forcing you to go around, when you are at 500' etc... :D

I can't wait for the next version to come out-by the looks of the article, v10 will be stunning.

I hope they sort out the crashing problem caused by the scenery / memory allocation.

Same problem on 4 different PCs for me

Really cant wait for Flight Simulator X, even though I still have plenty to do on FS9

I wish they would include parts like when there is bad weather you get diverted to

other places and many many other things :D We will have to see if these do actually happen :p

As for addons there are plenty of sites which I use for scenery and Ai traffic so my FS is really booming

with 100% realistic traffic

You should check some of them out ;)

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but if you've not yet watched Gates' Keynote from CES, there is mention during the FS:X presentation that the dev team still has 10 months to work on it ;)

At least, thats what I can remember. And, that FSPlanet article Q & A session states

Q: When will ?Microsoft Flight Simulator X? be available?

A: We are working hard to deliver ?Flight Simulator X? in the holiday 2006 timeframe.
