MPEG Player for open SUSE 10.2?

Recommended Posts

I just installed on seperate drives Fedora 6 and open SUSE 10.2. In Fedora I figured out how to install Xine & MPlayer for mpeg's. Works perfect. I can't find a simple (like myself) way to install either in openSuse 10.2. Can't find an RPM for either or dependicies to make these work in suse 10.2. Or are there codecs for any player installed in openSuse to play mpeg's? If any method requires .tar.gz'sat's fine; I'll figure out how to install from suse manuals from 8.2, but would rather use RPM's.

Thanks very much--not a linux expert at all! But it's got to better than buying Vista!!!!!

Install mplayer from source, all you have to do is (as per the docs) "./configure", "make", and as root "make install". The site is http://mplayerhq.hu. If you REALLY only want to use packages (like me), you can use checkinstall (may be a package in yast, or just google) to create a package from the source.

Tried the above install from pacman---failed. Needed over 15 dependencies.

I done this several different times on different computers and there were no issues at all. Just add the repository to your YaST and refresh. The dependency issues should be solved by YaST.

Open the control center.

Click YaST modules

Click Software

Click Change Installation Source

Click Add

Select http

Put packman.iu-bremen.de in the site field

Put suse/9.1 in the path field (<--- make sure that you substitute 9.1 for whatever version of SuSE you have)

Click OK

Are you using KDE or GNOME? which program do you want to listen to MP3's in?

If you are using GNOME, Helix Banshee should play them strait out-of-the-box, if you are using KDE and Amarok add the ftp.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.2/ repo and install libxine1 through YaST, then Amarok should be able to play MP3's.

If you want to play MP3's in other GStreamer apps, ie. not Helix Banshee or Real Player you should install the plugin from Fluendo.

Don't worry, it is free. Just hard to distribute legally, hence the 'web shop'.

neowolf.uk" I'm using gnome and have no desire to play mp3's, just mpeg movie clips of my grandkids.

barneyt:

I follow the instruction exactly as far as "click ok". I can't find anything with click ok, just "next". I can't figure out how to get everything listed from pacman, and not sure what to select besides "MPlayer"? I put mplayer in fedora 6 and had to install six files listed under mplayer-xxx. Went in perfectly and runs fine, but I like suse 10.2.

Really, you just need mplayer, the mplayer-plug in for mozilla, and the w32codec pack. That is it. Once you put the Packman repostiory in your YaST (as described, then click whatever finishes the dialogue box) Now simply click on Install and Remove Software and the entire packman library is now listed. Search for mplayer, then w32codec and the mozilla mplayer plug-in......

Sorry that you are having such issues....

Did you look a the alternate SMART package manager:

http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=SMART_Package_Manager

And the additional YaST repositories here:

http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_package_repository

Once they are added, there should not be any additional issues with dependancies.

Another good distro is Ubuntu....... lots of great reviews about it for new learners trying it....

Wilhelmus: OK I tried one more time & put in VLC as per Videolan. Everything went just fine with the directory ending with SUSE 10.2. Tried to install vlc/0.8.6 and it needed a dependency of XFree 86-libs 4.3.99.902 something. I found this file and tried to install---failed to install-wrong version for suse 10.2.

Now I know why old dummies like myself will be stuck with Windows. Linux must wait for me. I started 8 years ago with NT 4.0---took 2 bottles of aspirin and a couple of baseball bats to get it to work my way. Maybe I need Advil and a shotgun to get SUSE 10.2 working for me!

Maybe in the future somebody will create an RPM just for SUSE 10.2 that will install "MPlayer/Xine Player/ or VLC player" with ALL dependencies for linux dummies! Fedora Core 6 has this and worked just fine. I didn't try VLC in Fedora since I installed both MPlayer and Xine Player.

I wanted to get SUSE 10.2 complete on one system because it finds my lanset satellite disk. Fedora 6 will not find the satellite but did find my DSL on second system. One system is IDE boot & the other is SCSI boot; but that doesn't make a damn bit of difference So will run fedora and wait!

Thanks to everyone for patience and all of the help.

:) SOLVED::::: Fixed it finally. Here is info for anyone else having trouble putting MPlayer in open SUSE 10.2.

HowTo Install MPlayer from commandline in open SUSE 10.2

(Type exactly with spaces or you'll get an error can't find source)

1) start a terminal application:

(konsole on KDE or gnome-terminal on Gnome)

2) switch to root user, using the following command: su -

( enter your password & enter)

3) type: installation_sources -a http://packman.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/10.2

(this will add packman repository to yast2"list of installation sources) +enter

4) type: yast2 --install MPlayer kaffeine ffmpeg

(if it says something about X64 is locked, check "keep X64:)

(it may ask for your open suse CD/DVD; put in and click OK)

( this will add any unique suse dependencies) Exit terminal

5) thats it for kaffeine and mplayer except you'll need to go back to your GUI-install software, this will form

a list of software available. Find the unique "w32-codec-all" for your installation and install.

This will make both player play MWV & AVI's.

6) reboot & when you start kaffine you'll get three options, select the first option. when you open MPlayer

you'll get a small error message about a file missing, just click "OK" and it plays just fine.

I will try to find this missing file later.

Barney: One more quick question. How do I get suse 10.2 to find my other (5) NTFS hard drives that are also on this system? None are boot HD's but contain most of my grandkids .mpeg files. It finds all removable devices including my ORB drive, but doesn't show other HD's on a promise card, IDE & scsi.

NTFS support is not always enabled by default. Here is the package to download to get it working......... ntfs3g

There are several other projects for NTFS access - mostly the linux-ntfs project which is included in the linux kernel. This provides read only access as write access is usually turned off for safety - it's rather unsafe. There are a few projects looking at decent write support. Captive-NTFS, NTFS-3G...a quick google will bring you to the projects.

Remember, reading NTFS is safe, but writing to it using Linux is iffy........

Here is another interesting artcle for other things that you might need: http://www.softwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/60
