Changing file icons and context-menus in Vista, XP style

Recommended Posts

It's probably been mentioned a few times here already but I didn't find it mentioned in this forum.

One of the worst parts of Vista for me is changing icons of different file types and getting their context menu's stacked properly. (I for instance like ISOs and other CD/DVD images to have "Mount image" as default double-click action and a "Play in VLC" secondary option on right-click). It was pretty easy to get this stuff working in XP but Vista sucks in this area.

Some have mentioned StarDocks Icon Packager (US$15) as a good solution as it supports Live Folders but I don't really like it because it roots itself in File Properties which I hate when apps do.

Anyways the best app to get the job done I reckon is the File Type Doctor which comes with Creative Elements Power Tools. It would be super awesome if it was a standalone app but the other stuff in the pack it comes in is semi-handy (although I don't really use the other things).

slightly hijacking, but is there a way to create a "show/hide files and folder" context menu item...

in XP i used fast explorer to do this, but no luck with Vista....

no problem, sorted http://forums.techguy.org/tech-tips-tricks...files-file.html

I keep hidden files visible all the time. It's the super hidden files (or hidden system files) that I need the toggle for.

Any such tool?

I've updated the Show/Hide System Files Context Menu Item:

SuperHidden? -> Show/Hide System & Hidden files.

SuperHidden -> Show/Hide System files only.:))

I've just found out that they didn't remove the File Types tab but disabled or hidden it,.. the resources are still there:

In the registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B091E540-83E3-11CF-A713-0020AFD79762} (= File Types Page)

%SystemRoot%\System32\en-US\shell32.dll.mui -> Dialog 1099, 1100 & 1101

Could you please detail a little better how to change the registry for this?

Thanks

I didn't change anything in the registry, I just pointed out that they didn't remove the File Types Page, but disabled it.

Resources:

ClassID {B091E540-83E3-11CF-A713-0020AFD79762} = File Types Page

%SystemRoot%\System32\en-US\shell32.dll.mui -> Dialogs 1099, 1100 & 1101

The screenshots show the dialogs in shell32.dll.mui via a resource hacker (Resource Tuner).
