I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and hook it up to one of my dual displays here at my desk but I was wondering what people's thoughts were on the quality of the system (price of how much you pay versus value of what you get). I own a PSP 1000 and do enjoy it so it made me curious to see some of the interactiveness that those two systems share, but also I'd like to see what the PS3 can offer.

Alternatively I was thinking of getting the new PSP 3000 and some new games (as I do really like my current PSP).

Some helpful nudges in either direction?

Well a good start would be telling us what monitor you own? Is it HDCP compliant? Support HDMI/DVI, or component?

Sounds like you're a bit of a gamer, so you'll get moneys worth out of gaming on the PS3.

Have you had a look at what games are out/what games are coming out?

Do you watch movies a lot though? Actually being interested in Blu Ray will add value to your purchase.

If you're not interested in Blu Ray the PS3 is still a great media hub for all your video files.

As for the PSP3000.

Going from the PSP1000 will be quite a nice jump. You'll be getting a slimmer PSP, much better screen and all the other small tweaks and changes.

I would probably wait a bit more on the PS3, LBP is out this month and there's sure to be some good bundle packs. Waiting on a price drop this year though seems optimistic, probably just bundles.

However if you chase a 40GB model just now, which is being discontinued I think, you can get them fairly cheap in comparison to RRP.

Where do you live? Right now you can get a 40GB for ?240 in the UK - http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk/sony/ps3-40gb.html (however it comes with a Sixaxis controller, not a DualShock 3 which is now shipping in the new PS3 models)

Well there is a lot of reasons to get a PS3.

Firstly you can use it as a media center - store all of your movies, music and pictures on the hard drive or even remove it and add a larger one without voiding warranty.

If you ever decide to buy any accessories for the PS3 such as a microphone or webcam the products do not need to be SONY - meaning cheap accessories (as with the 360 you need specific ones as only microsoft are compatible with it).

You cant' mod it so if you were thinking of that it is a no-go (although it may be in the future).

There is not much compatibility with the PSP - PS3 from what i have learnt. All you can do is pretty much play PSP games through the tv (clarification) and view the PS3 XMB on your PSP - it can also be used as a portable game save device.

You get a blu-ray player in the PS3 meaning high definition viewing.. if you ever wanted a bluray player they are nearing the price of the PS3 - but with the PS3 you get much more and a bluray player.

Quite a wide variety of games with alot of good exclusives already out and coming soon.

As for your choice with the PSP3000 welll......... its okay but when you think of the things you can do with the PSP and the things you can do with the PS3 im sure you will be won over by PS3.

You can get them for quite cheap now (40GB AUS model - not sure bout US) Because 80gb just came out in AUS.

So yeah. PS3 was the best thing i have ever bought gaming/media wise and won't regret it.

Also multiplayer online is free - unlike 360. Some say 360 servers are better etc. i cannot tell really much difference.

I'm running two Dell Ultrasharp displays (2007WFP and 2001FP), I have them both connected to my computer through DVI so I was thinking of using the second head (VGA) on either display to connect to the PS3 and then switch inputs with the controls on the monitor. I'm not sure what that would do to quality but it's surely better than a standard definition TV (which would be my other option).

I'm sure you can probably get some sort of splitter for DVI, where you can flick a switch between PS3/PC.

HDMI > DVI looks great, that's how mine was hooked up before I bought my new set. Also, most monitors that have DVI and VGA have an input switch on the monitor itself.

If it makes it any easier a decision there's a great deal at HMV the now. ?335 for the 80GB console, GTAIV and an extra controller. This deal persuaded me to get it and I think at that price, it's extremely good value.

This is of course in the UK but it shows you that this is the time to buy when you have bundles like these at good prices. Also make sure that if you want one you get it before xmas or it'll not be happening.

Haha..hmm any recommendations on a large widescreen LCD?

This is the one I just bought, and it is beautiful. Takes a bit of cheddar to obtain, but totally worth every penny. I was using a smaller Sceptre LCD monitor before that, and it was very good for the money. Here is a pretty decent 23".
