Two Little Birds Outside My Doorstep

Recommended Posts

I live on Diego Garcia. A small British island, which houses a US Navy base, in the Indian Ocean. I see these bids outside of my balcony all of the time.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I was told that this is the only species of birds that never builds a nest. They just lay their eggs among the branches. It kind of makes sense, since the winds are so high here. Evolution at work.

I also don't know if they mate for life, but they are certainly dedicated towards each other. When the rains come, I always see them huddled together, bearing out the storm.

These birds just fascinate me. I don't know if the male and female birds switch sitting on the eggs, or if the male is off getting food for it's mate.

Notice how the bird has wedged a branch in between it's tail-feathers, to stay on top of the eggs during the high winds here. If anyone knows what species this is, I'd love learn more.

BONUS BIRD PICS!!!

The male finches turn red to attract a female. Everyone feeds them, because they are so cute. Usually they are on the balcony looking for food (they will come into your room if your door is open), now they just want to keep dry.

EDIT: Now that I look at the pictures, they are not all the way down the balcony. Just around me. Maybe it's not about the rain, it's about the food!

Feed them xD, thats a big mob of finchs :D

Usually the finches are cool.

But once a year, when the man-finches turn red? The he-finches are horny, the she-finches are trying to fly away. It's crazy season.

In the mean time, you just want to go to your room and play some Mass Effect. But you have to step over some finch love-making going on.

I hope they get it out of their system when Fallout 3 comes out, because I'm not going to slow down anymore walking down that balcony!

This is my house, finch!

It's rainy season on Diego Garcia. Here's a video of a good day! Often there are blankets of rain pouring down, but she is always there, sitting on her eggs, 24hrs a day.

When I get home at midnight, the male is usually a few branches away. He has the luxury of finding a more comfortable position.

When I came home today in the afternoon, the male was gone. I assume looking for food.

Wish I lived in the tropics. Went to Holland a month or so ago and whilst traversing about we found lots of Canals running along side the houses in the town we stayed in. All I can is Ducks, ducks, ducks, ducks and more ducks.

I,ll try post a pic or 2 later of said Ducks but we counted about 20 or so in a 10ft stretch of canal.
