RAF evacuating 200 people from Cockermouth Flood

A major rescue operation is underway to evacuate hundreds of residents in the flood-hit town of Cockermouth in Cumbria.

Three RAF Sea King helicopters and a number of lifeboat crews are trying to evacuate around 200 people stranded in the centre of the town.

Water levels have topped 3ft and are expected to rise further. Vehicles have been washed away in the floods.

Hundreds of homes have been flooded and the downpour is due to continue ovenight.

Sky's north of England correspondent, Mike McCarthy, said the current was so strong he saw several burly emergency service workers swept off their feet.

TV pictures showed one woman being rescued by a lifeboat crew from a first floor room. She described the conditions as "horrendous".

McCarthy said: "I don't think I've ever seen so many emergency service vehicles together in one place at one time.

"But it gives an indication of the scale of the operation they now face."

I feel sorry for the hundreds of people whose homes have been flooded. I bet the cleanup cost is going to be massive.

My dad lives near a town called Upper Dicker... :p And not far from me, is a town called Thong.

I love those olde Englishe town names ;)
