Burj Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي‎ "Dubai Tower"), a supertall skyscraper under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 818 m (2,684 ft). Construction began on 21 September 2004, and the tower is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy on 4 January 2010.[1][2]

The building is part of the 2 km2 (0.8 sq mi) flagship development called "Downtown Burj Dubai" at the "First Interchange" along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai's main business district. The tower's architect is Adrian Smith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006.[6][7] The Chicago-based architecture and engineering firm SOM is in charge of the project.[6] The primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix along with Arabtec.[8] Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager.[9]

The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion, and for the entire new "Downtown Dubai", US$20 billion.[10] Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the CEO of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said that the price of office space at Burj Dubai had reached US$4,000 per sq ft (over US$43,000 per m2) and that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Dubai, were selling for US$3,500 per sq ft (over US$37,500 per m2).

What a horrible croc of s***. A pointless, expensive, didlo-esque, self involved, ego stroking skyscraper.

If it looked "good" it may have been able to recoup some of its shame but it doesn't even achieve that, it merely holds a record for tallest building. The cost of going up is only sensible when land availability and price is at a premium such as dense city - this is on the edge of a desert. If they had built buildings 10 stories high it would have cost less than 20% of the price and been much more personal and better to use, instead they build this monstrosity.

The only thing this has going for it is "postcard appeal" and a record, which is similar across all of the Dubai developments.

I wonder when they will realise they are missing communities - "postcard appeal" only sells stuff, it doesn't make it work in use. All the best bits in the best cities in the world are the little intimate places like bars and cafes and little streets where most people actually want to live their lives.

I just watched a show on Discovery HD about this, and a few other buildings in Dubai, but its pretty cool to see its finished. So damn quick too. When is it going to be open to the public, do we know?

sad....all that money could have done some good in this world...Dubai funds most of the terrorism in the middle east in case you have been keeping up with your reading...those sheiks are filthy rich and **** as *ell! Oil is corrupting the world!

...which is exactly why they've built it. They realise that the oil will run out, and so they are turning to tourism. Get a load of records in the same place and people have a reason for going. People are going to want to see this. I want to go to the top of it and get scared witless when I look down. It's one hell of an acheivement, and I for one applaud them for that.

I don't, however, agree with the fact that they used cheap labour or squalid working conditions for the labourers who worked all the hours to build it. But you know what? They did build it and people are going to want to see it.
