Waterloo, Iowa to get fastest internet in the US

WATERLOO - Mediacom is preparing to give local customers the speediest Internet service in the nation.

Company officials have chosen Waterloo to launch a new residential broadband product providing download speeds of 105 megabytes per second.

"That will make it the fastest Internet service in North America," said Lee Grassley, Mediacom's senior manager of government relations. "We want to use Waterloo as a showcase for this."

The "Ultra 105" package is expected to be available for residential customers by the end of December, with a similar business service launched within six months.

I'm really excited! My little town of Waterloo is the last place I expected to get internet like this.

The article says 105 "megabytes per second" but then later says "105 Mbps" which is bits not bytes. Oh well that's still awesome news... the US needs better internet bad lol

I know lots of people in other countries that have 100mbit connections and only pay around 30USD for it, I wonder how much this will cost :p

Fastest residential internet*

How much is that going to cost a month? I assume it would be somewhat reasonable as if its not next to no-one will want it, but hopefully it will get companies (like Comcast, Time Warner, etc) to take a second look at their system and get some better speeds out there in other areas.

Yeah, I'm sure it's 105 mbit and not 105 mbyte. 105 mbyte would be insane.

Seeing as how communication speeds from ISPs and in the IEEE networking specifications are all megabits per second I think it is safe to assume that was a typo. Most journalists aren't techies like us so they don't get the difference between those words.

You have to remember that countries like South Korea with speeds like that are smaller than than Iowa, but have 1/6th the population of the entire US. They are all much closer together so its much easier to create a network with speeds like that.

Just be careful with all this fantastic news. Yes they say 105 but read the fine print, what is the guaranteed max and min? You will be in for shock. We have over here here in Hungary from UPC fiber optic power at 120 megabytes but it it guaranteed max 80 and min 20 but you are stuck in the pay price. The EU is trying to solve this lie. If they advertise as such they must provide it and not tell fables such as the distance is to far from the hubso the speed is downgraded, etc...

Well... I got the fasted as of now, Optimum Online Ultra @ 101/15. That's mega bits. Sometimes I even get higher if I am to believe the bandwidth measuring tools I have.

Optimum bills itself as having the fastest residential Internet speed in the USA. I suspect to keep that claim they will better the Waterloo speeds if and when they happen.

Um...another Battle of Waterloo?

I'm wondering about the costs for this too since even Cablevision (covers the north east - Upper NJ, NYC to CT) has a 101Mbps package for about $100.00 a month.

If i can get 30-50Mbps speeds for $60 a month, that would be perfect for me!

Ireland needs something like this. Prices + speeds are rubbish here, especially upload.

Agreed. I can't provide testament on the download/upload rates offered in the UK & EU countries, but the data transfer lopsidedness in most noncommercial offerings in the US (especially the Mid-Atlantic states) is atrocious. Who whispered in these corporation's ears that such uneven asymmetric speeds were the way to go??

Personally i'd prefer something of a 50/50 to 60/40 speed ratio for my residence, but the closest offering available in my area comes from Comcast (15Mbps Down/3Mbps Up Comcast advertises, but testimony from friends/personal experience claim it's actually closer to 5~7Mbps/1.75~2Mbps on average.). If my math (offhand) is correct, that's more like a 70/30~75/25 download/upload ratio. This they want $43 USD + taxes/Comcast-imposed surcharges per-month for?! They can keep it, I say!

<---- works for Cablevision Tech Support

You are lucky even I can't get it and it's 100% uncapped :)

I would gladly pay the $100 if they would allow employees into this plan

Not in my experience, see my sign speeds for what i got on Comcast in Gaithersburg, MD which is right outside DC.

Yowza, that's not bad at all for download speed!!

But yeah, in regards to your download vs. upload speeds, that's almost a 10:1 download/upload ratio. I was just saying that I would personally like for an ISP to offer something alot more symmetrical, even if the download speeds are lower than, say, 10Mbps. I'd compromise and make due if I could find something like 7-9Mbps/4-5Mbps for what Comcast would want for 15Mbps/3Mbps connection speeds.

i got Mediacom as well and the price will be a little high.

for 105 it will be 150$ first 12 months then it will go up to 200$

they will also have a 50mb connection that will cost 100$ for first 12 months then it will go up to 120$ after that.

The US? Need better internet? HAHAHA, give me a break. Come over to australia for a month, and suffer on our low quota for high prices! (50gig, 1500/512 for 50 AUD), or if you move into a rural place, get even smaller quotas! (5GIG for 50 dollars!)
