It's a shame that something as seemingly inconsequential as the load times is the main problem with a game as good as ModNation Racers, but I guess that speaks to the overall quality of everything else. The driving is fun, the creating is deep but easy, and the community is going to thrive. Sure, you might have to wait a bit longer than you'd like to get to the racing, but it's honestly not that bad and this game is worth it.

8.0 Presentation

The loads are long, but that's really the only hitch when it comes to presentation. The story drops your character into cutscenes, and it's a breeze to communicate with others.

9.0 Graphics

The game looks awesome in motion. The fact that your created kart and character can look like they're from the developer amazes me. Cutscenes could be sharper, though.

8.5 Sound

The career hosts deliver a funny performance. You'll need to listen for incoming weapons to time your shield usage right. I could've gone for more voices for my creations.

9.0 Gameplay

Drifting feels great, the shield is welcome, and I was challenged without being frustrated? too much. Being able to restart lap challenges would've been nice, but the online stuff rocks.

9.5 Lasting Appeal

Tokens to find, an online community to conquer, and a nearly endless stream of free content ? if you don't mind the loads, you'll be playing for a long, long time.

Even if MNR was 'just' a racing game, the annoyances would be minor niggles. But ModNation Racers is far more than a kart game - it's the new friendly face of DIY gaming. The creation tools are accessible and the editing mechanics comfortably familiar - more so than any other 'make your own' style game on PS3. It even caters to classic, often overlooked, split-screen racing alongside conventional 12-player online play. It's the only kart racer you'll ever need, and although not the best racing experience out there, it's certainly the most fun. And if you don't enjoy what's on offer, you've only yourself to blame...

PSM3 Verdict

ModNation Racers contains...

Wacky racers, Intuitive editing, Frustrating objectives, Potential.

Overall: Simple, smart editing tools and sound racing make this the king of kart racers.

Was interested in it until I found out a few weeks ago it was a retail game and not PSN.

Way over priced for what it is imo. At least I won't have to connect to PSN when I buy it eventually though (like I would if it was a download).

New games will probably start shipping with the firmware as the newer updates free up more memory for devs.

And I still don't see how this is overpriced if Mario Kart can be full price.

It actually has a fleshed out career and a fully fledged track creator.

Good reviews. The fact that it has four-player split-screen makes it a day one purchase for me. There aren't nearly enough games doing that these days.

And I don't really think it's overpriced, at least comparatively speaking. In terms of longevity, I'll probably put a lot more hours into this than I will in a game like Splinter Cell (although perhaps you could argue that both games are overpriced, thereby negating my argument :)).

Agree with the first part. Short of getting a Wii, there aren't many local multiplayer games nowadays which is a shame because i used to have a blast playing games with my friends together.

Load times are a bit of a bind, although that's lessened somewhat by the almost instant restarts that are available after failed races. Because there's only ever one unfinished track available at a time in single-player, however, and given the levels of teeth-grinding which some of the more unfair outcomes can produce, you might find that quitting out to soothe your rage with some gentle creativity punctuates a fair few of your racing experiences.United Front deserves to be praised for much that they've done here - putting so much creativity and community in the hands of the player is something which only LittleBigPlanet has pulled off on console before. It's just a shame that that success had to be tempered by a somewhat overenthusiastic approach to the unpredictability inherent in the genre. That said, those with a calmer and more artistic temperament than I, with a little more patience, can probably add another mark to the score - especially online.

7/10

I would too have loved to seen this as a PSN title.

+1, exact reason im picking this up, and maybe for my psp too (but MGS might change that...) :)

After looking at the video review and the gameplay, I am really anticipating this game. And as others have pointed out, the 4 player split screen is definitely a plus. My friends are tired of me beating the **** out of them in Tekken and Street Fighter.

just watched the video review on IGN and this jumped to the top of my want list.. I def agree its tough to shell out $60 on a game like this when you pay the same for God of War III. I def will check it out via rental or something first because I was not overly impressed with Mario Kart for the Wii so its possible this type of game has lost is appeal for me

I am actually the same. I thought this was a PSN and was going to use the PSN Card I have to buy it but it isn't so probably won't buy it until its much cheaper! I hope they do offer it as a download though!

About as likely as them offering LBP as a download.

I would love it as a download then I can use my ?20 PSN card for it! Don't care about the slow speeds, I have 50meg but I would pribably just leave it running overnight, no biggie.

50mb would probably only take an hour or two. I have 20mb, and I am downloading HD 9gb movies in about 45 minutes.

I think Mario Kart is over priced too (or at least it was for the longest time). Hell I don't think it even dropped price on the DS either.

Just because Mario Kart is over priced doesn't make it ok :p

Damn I thought you'd defend Mario Kart :p

I was going to get this in America, but with how crap the pound/dollar is just now game prices over there seem expensive :/ Although I am getting a $20 Amazon gift card through RDR, I might put it towards this.

I'll definitely be picking this up for sure. The amount of time I spend playing Mario Kart with my roommates I'd easily be getting my money's worth out of this. My one friend always hated the blue shell in Mario Kart, so he's pretty stoked you have defenses against that sort of thing in this one.

I feel the same way, this seems too much for this type of racing game, and while Mario kart might be full price too, I also don't think it is worth the money.

I'll probably get this when its come down in price a good bit.
