[Guide] Deus Ex Modding

Intstructions

Alright, before we do this, there are two different paths: One for people with a DX10 setup (DX10) and one for the non-DX10 crowd (non-DX10), choose one path and stick with it - i'll mark the sections accordingly.

  • Make a full install of Deus Ex. Doesn't matter where. Run the game once, then quit again.
  • Patch that **** up like it's 2052(You can skip that if you have the Steam or GOTY version)
  • Download HDTP
  • Download New Vision, a rather beautiful retexturing effort, very much made in mind of higher resolutions.
  • Download Shifter, famous for removing the suck. Various gameplay tweaks to round off the Deus Ex-perience lolseewhatididthere
  • (non-DX10) Get a DX9/OpenGL renderer from here
  • (DX10) download D3D10DRV, namely Version 17. DirectX 10 renderer for Deus Ex - works wonders in making the game look less dated.

Got them all? Oh, New Vision takes a while? Yeah, that's because it's really damn huge.

Okay, you did apply the patch already? Just checking. If you did, we can now install the mods with no further ado.

  • Execute HDTP-Release1.exe. Let it do its thing.
  • Drop all the .utx files in of 2009-03-27-NewVision.1.zip in your DeusEx/Textures/ folder, overwrite when prompted. Ignore the OpenGL/ folder. --Open up DeusEx.ini and find the group [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]. Under it, add the line: UseS3TC=True
  • Open 2009-11-02-Shifter_v1.8.3.zip and drop DeusEx.u and DeusEx.int into your DeusEx/System/ folder, overwrite when prompted. If you plan on some multiplayer sessions, make backups of those files beforehand and restore them before searching for games.
  • (DX10) open d3d10drv-v17.zip and drop the content of its DeusEx/ subdirectory (d3d10drv.dll, d3d10drv/, D3D10Drv.int) in your DeusEx/System/ folder.
  • (non-DX10) Get a DX9 and/or OpenGL renderer from here and drop them in your DeusEx/System/ folder.

So, with all that behind us, the only thing left to do is to choose your renderer. You do so by opening the game and clicking Rendering Device in the Display menu. Once that is hopen, check Show all Devices.

  • (DX10) choose Direct3D 10 Support
  • (non-DX10) choose OpenGL or Direct3D9 Support
  • Don't forget to set the Colour Depth setting in the game's display menu to 32-bit (Might have to do it twice, I recall that there's some bug floating around), set Detail Textures to On and if you have a good grasp on the Unreal engine you can do some further ini tweaking
  • (DX10) If you press 't' ingame and enter "preferences", you'll be taken to the Advanced Options menu, where you can activate Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Anisotropic Filtering (AF)

thanks!!!!

this is exactly what i was looking for.

Azies: totally inappropriate comment. the first game was one of the best game ever, and many replay it in original form. better example would be body work and repaint on your favorite 70's sports car :D
