Why We Display Advertising
Neowin is in every sense of the word a 2 way street, the visitors ensure we can stay online by visiting and allowing the ads to display (ad blockers are detected by our publishers and we don't get paid for blocked ads). It's our duty to invest that revenue back into the site as we've been doing for the past 3 or 4 years, which has in turn offered stability far beyond anything we had before 2005.
For a detailed discussion on the issue, it's pro's and cons by our members & staff please refer to this forum topic on the subject.
Server Hardware
Our Servers run the latest stable version of Redhat Enterprise. We use Hewlett Packard 19" rack Servers hosted on a multi-homed connection, all are Intel Pentium Xeon's with at least 4 GB of system memory per server. Additionally the storage devices are 2x 73 GB S-ATA hard-drives per server. Our database is managed by MySQL (latest stable) and we currently run PHP5 on our apache servers.
In 2008 we purchased a 64-bit Intel Pentium Xeon Quad core HP Server to manage our MySQL database, this came with 16GB of system memory.
- Server 1 (Built in 2008) - MYSQL 1, E-Mail
- Server 2 (Built in 2005) - MYSQL 2 Backup
- Server 3 (Built in 2005) - Apache (Web Server 1)
- Server 4 (Built in 2005) - Apache (Web Server 2)
- Server 5 (Built in 2005) - Beta Test Server

About Neowin
Neowin.net, launched in October 2000 by Steven Parker & Marcel Klum, is a technology news website that actively focuses on Windows, PCs, Mac and Linux. Neowin runs under the slogan, "Where unprofessional journalism looks better."
While Neowin does not employ full time professional journalists, we offer both community and staff members to try their hand at submitting articles to our news system. Staff are paid on merit for their original stories up to $10 per article, based on amount of views, amount of comments and how far the article was picked up by other websites. Registered members are only ever approached by Neowin staff after significant (original and correctly formatted) contributions to the news system, for possible addition to the news team.
Significant Post Marks
- July 19, 2006, surpassed the 5 million post mark at or around 6:30am Eastern Time.

Neowin v5.0 (October 2008)
The Finity design was built on the back of ideas and proposals from our registered members & MVC group, with design proposals (image mock's) by Jason Kelley and Simon Andrews, XHTML 1.0 Strict HTML coding & CSS mark up by Tim Kimberl, Javascript by Rob Wright, PHP (back end) code by Marcel Klum and Simon Andrews, all supervised by Steven Parker.
The design is not intended for re-sale, as it is built into a theme engine unique to this website.
Changes to the layout
Since 2001, Neowin has always had separate categories for Main, Software and Gamers news, we further improved on this by adding tabs at the top of the page (with Shift v4, in October 2006), after feedback showed that many readers were unaware of the separate news pages.
With the new Finity design we have opted to display all of the news categories on the main entry page of Neowin, with the option to display all news of a certain category by selecting it from the main menu in the header, or by clicking on the category bar above the news title of an article page. This allows us to display news from every category on the main page, and also allows readers to catch up on news in a certain category. The “Around the Web” section was added to the main page so that we are finally able to separate syndicated news, from our own original submissions.
Fair usage of the Neowin logo
The Neowin logo was created by Jason Kelley and was based off an earlier version that Larry Cook made in 2001. While the Neowin logo is currently not a legal trademark, we do allow external websites to use it in reference to Neowin.net.
