Talking to leading French financial newspaper, Les Echos, Microsoft boss Bill Gates let slip some of the features to be included in the Xbox 2 and how it will launch its assault on the living room.

Bill Gates stated that "the next-generation Xbox will feature digital media capabilities such as video and photo editing in addition to games."

Despite repeated assertions that Xbox is "just a games console," this moves it even closer toward the complete Home Entertainment System ideal. It appears the way forward is for this to be fully connected on a wider network, a linked home system that does everything except pull the flush.

As Bill Gates suggests, the Xbox 2 will feature "Internet capabilities without the need for direct connections through Wi-Fi."

All these bells and whistles aren't as unusual as they sound for a game console, as DVD instead of CD was a surprise inclusion at the time of the PS2 announcement. Don't be surprised if Xbox 2 also has video recording like Tivo, as well as complete digital image editing and exchange via the internet compatibility.

With some telcos slapping limits on how much their users can download each day, we have to wonder how they will cope when this technology goes online. We suspect that the new technology will only be available to selected users even when the exchanges are upgraded and it's bound to be expensive at first. But these things have a way of trickling down to the average customer eventually

Yes, but this should be more practical because it can sit in the living room like a VCR, and is much easier to use. Plus you're lying on your sofa with the remote or the game controller with a big TV screen, it's much more comfortable.

Regardless they are just trying to make more money on what a PC can already do. It's safe to say a ton of people have a PC, 3/4's the population in Canada/US (safe to say??) Anyway if that's true then why the hell would I want all that stuff on it if I can do it on the PC I already have. Money ploy is what it is. PS2 still rules!

In the eyes of the common consumer, it is still just a game console. There are more average joe buyers then hardcore gamers and they will be more picky. Personally I think that M$ is starting to get ahead of themselves too quickly and if they are not carefult hey will fall on their face. I'm being realistic people and this is not meant to be an anti-M$ post or anything.

Gee let me see, a choice between Photoshop ( a REAL image editing program) or the image editing program on the Xbox2... ...I wonder if the image editing program on the Xbox2 is gonna be MS Paint?

Here, let me make it more simple for you. Take a PC with XP Media Edition, network capability for movies, audio and pictures, add a Tivo Like device to it(PVR) and sprinkle some XBOX Console games, and you have the ultimate Livingroon device! Can be connected to the rest of the house with WiFi, you can watch the recorded movies/music/pictures on any of the PCs in the house, and whenever you feel like it have some fun and plays some games on it, with games provided by the current #2 console in the world, with things only getting better. Oh BTW: All this at a competitive price to the PS3 if not identical price to starve the competition with the 46BILLION dollar cash on hand waiting investement. Any questions?

ok when has Microsoft ever said that the Xbox is just a games console??? they've always said it's a entertainment system, dvd player etc... and jago, considering that many dvd players now allow you to view picture slideshows, this is just xbox 2 catching up with that feature. why shouldn't a system with a dvd player be a full featured dvd player.

[/neoquote] There's a difference there macross, Gates says image editing. Thats different then image slideshows. I think that image viewing on DVD players is cool. It saves you on having to waste your digi cam batteries while it is plugged in to the TV. DVD playback on consoles is fine with me too (hell that was one of the 2 reasons why I bought a PS2 the day it came out), but they might as well call the Xbox2 a PC.

They should've called the Xbox 1 a PC.

[neoquote=#7.2 by Mav Phoenix]They should've called the Xbox 1 a PC. [/neoquote] it's a pc as much as the playstation 2 is. when you pay for all the extra stuff you need. network adapter, harddrive, a controller adapter so more than 2 people can play.

Let's remember that the PS2 isn't running with a PIII/Celeron and a GF3 (as the Xbox of course is), both being VERY PC components.

I think this is great! It's an advancement in technology (plus I hate PlayStations...Sony [shivers]). Anyway, Xbox rules, and Xbox Next, wooooowwweeeeeee!

Why would they need to worry about anything else right now? The xbox is 2x what PS2 is, and this was their first attempt in the industry. X2 will be the sweetest thing on the market just like the X1 is now.

I wonder if the people who talk bad about the Xbox actually don't like it becasue they feel its a dumpy system, or if its becasue its a MS product..

as long as they keep it way cheaper than a PC, they can add all the features they want, right?

Video editing I can understand, but photo editing? What do you need that for on a console / TV-screen..?

How can you justify video editing on a console-esqe device??? I do video editing extensively and it would truly SUCK doing it in front of a TV screen without the total package (flexibility, power, etc.) that my PC offers. I think MS is just trying to get the focus off of its sub par video game line up with all of this talk about Xbox as an entertainment device. As the adage goes: "jack of all trades, but master of none".

Xbox is a GAME console for crying out loud. Why include all those junk if we have those already in our TV shelf. I guess Bill dude really put alot of money into Xbox 2 and probably it gonna costs lot more too.
