DOOM, the Movie

Word of a movie based on DOOM has been kicking around for a while, but Todd Hollenshead gave CGW the scoop on how things are coming along.

They just got a revised draft of the script and it's looking really good. According to his agent, it's the hottest property in Hollywood (but don't all agents say that?). "Our deal is actually putting time pressure on Warner Brothers to not sit and wait on the movie." Previous aborted attempts with both Columbia and Universal resulted in them just sitting on the rights. Getting savvier to Hollywood business, id signed a progress-to-completion deal. Meaning: they are taking no money up front, but putting WB under strict deadlines. According to the agent, this means, "You're not paying us, but you're paying someone to meet these deadlines. If you don't get a script by this date, get green lit by this one, if you don't start filming by a certain time, then the rights immediately come back to us."

Warner Brothers is taking DOOM very seriously, even putting it on a fast track. John Wells (known for producing ER) and Lorenzo Bonaventura (brought The Matrix, among others, to Warner Brothers) are working to get the movie made.

Hollenshead's Personal Hell Knight (Agent):
"I think DOOM 3 is a great property...and so do [Wells and Bonaventura]. So we're focused on a strong script and from there build the momentum to attract the right director and actors."

GSpot is a tool that can tell you exactly which codecs are needed to play a certain video file. This is very helpful when you have troubles playing a video file.
You can choose between the two different XviD decoders via the startmenu shortcuts that will be created during the installation. When you have problems with the current active one, then switching to the other one usually solves your problems.
DirectVobSub is a tool for displaying subtitles. Your subtitle file should have the same filename as your video file (for example Movie.avi and Movie.sub) and should be in the same folder as your video file. Then the subtitles will automatically be displayed in most players. FourCC Code Changer is a program for changing the FourCC code of a video file. The FourCC code is used to identify which codec should be used to decode the file. This tool is for expert users only. Matrix Mixer can be used to amplify the sound of a video file. It also can mix stereo sound to multiple channels (useful for 4.1 or higher speaker sets). Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher can be used to switch between two audio streams in a video file that has two audio streams. These types of video files are not very common. BSplayer also has this functionality built-in. So if you use BSplayer, you don't need to install this.
DivX Anti-Freeze is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker. So don't install it if you use Movie Maker. It's not possible to install both the Ligos and the Elecard MPEG-2 decoders at the same time, because that would result in neither of them working. So you can only install one of them.

what about final fantasy? i personally enjoyed the movie, but i do agree... 'most' movies spawned from games suck.
(1 reply) #4 Swampster on 30 Nov 2003 - 11:18
Might be released before the game, at this rate.
#4.1 Wrath Delivery on 01 Dec 2003 - 08:09
Perhaps they'll release them together to try and fuel some interest after letting us down so massively

i loved resident evil and final fantasy so i don't agree with captwinters..
with doom i foresee heavy guns
#6.1 CaptWinters on 30 Nov 2003 - 12:39
yeah but if you look at the figures, Final Fantasy: Spirits within was a total flop, Square was in trouble because they pumped so much cash into it,

As for Resident Evil, well it wasnt half bad, the actors could have done a bit better, it was like the voice acting in Res 1 on the PSOne, now that was dire
#6.2 Adem on 30 Nov 2003 - 14:12
i love resident evil, but i dont agree wth the final fantasy movie, i love final fantasy, but NOT the movie, it sucked apt from the Special FX
#6.3 Marduk on 30 Nov 2003 - 15:49
FF the movie is really underrated, it has an interesting story.
Resident Evil, now THAT was a turd if I ever saw one.
#6.4 i like chips on 30 Nov 2003 - 17:29
I loved the FF movie. I even bought the DVD :p I think it could have been just as good without pumping so much money into it....but oh well. Most people hated the movie because they couldn't understand it. I'm thinking, what the hell? I thought it was very straight forward :/ First mortal kombat was good. I liked resident evil and well, we'll have to wait for DOOM and see
#6.5 Miran on 30 Nov 2003 - 20:53
Have to agree with you there Marduk - I thought the plot was very original and interesting. However, I never played the games so I went to the movie with no expectations. I think that was the problem with FF... Gamers wanted, well, a 2 hour view-only game.....
#7 Osiris on 30 Nov 2003 - 14:10
Yeah Resident Evil Owned
and number 2 is due out mid next year. Cant wait

Fact is from Action movies, all you can ever expect is some shooting, some fancy footwork, maybe a but of tit here and there, and lots of blood. You want a good storyline, go read a book.
#8 INFERNO2k on 30 Nov 2003 - 15:39
There were talks about this way back in 1994, I remember specifically talks about scripts back then. I wonder if they've been revising ever since. I would have simply adored to see a movie based on the game way back in that time frame.
(1 reply) #9 Marduk on 30 Nov 2003 - 15:45
I like how they NEVER EVER mention the Doom novel quadrilogy, it was kinda interesting, had it's moments and all, but I mean nothing too great, still i think it's funny how they NEVER mention it, and it was even a fully licenced series.
Otherwise this movie will suck, one can only imagine how hollywood could whore it up to make it "cool" but then again, it won't take much to have fanbois spooging their drawers over this one.
#9.1 Marshalus on 30 Nov 2003 - 16:34
I read those books. Pretty good stuff.
#10 ABC½ on 30 Nov 2003 - 16:35

I read Knee Deep in the Dead and Hell on Earth
#12.1 Marduk on 30 Nov 2003 - 19:05
Ya the 3rd and 4th were kinda really bad, it's like the guys writing were like "hmmm what can we do to keep the readers interested" and then they were like "OH YES a Manila gorilla character". YES there are talking gorillas in the 3rd and 4th book of the series .
#13 forster on 30 Nov 2003 - 19:07
Its about god DAMN time
#14 Bant on 30 Nov 2003 - 19:44

(1 reply) #24 grafXguru on 01 Dec 2003 - 18:27
$20 says Vin Diesel or The Rock get asked.

Actually, based on the face in the initial screen shots, Bruce Willis would be a best match.
#24.1 evilroy on 01 Dec 2003 - 18:40
My vote's with Bruce Willis
