#4 rah2 on 29 Apr 2004 - 04:52
"Late Summer" as posted in the forums isn't a release date...its nothing but an estimation. I think come E3, we'll finally see some new footage and a solid release date. I must say though, those screenshots are looking mighty sexy!!!

What month is "late summer" exactly?
#6.1 rah2 on 29 Apr 2004 - 05:38
I guess you could consider "late summer" from the middle of August up till later September.
#6.2 blachole on 29 Apr 2004 - 12:00
you know...september 30th, 2004.
#7 KeR on 29 Apr 2004 - 05:50
the games does not look that impressive anymore, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is the new HL2 for me.
#8 paulkoan on 29 Apr 2004 - 06:21
Late summer where I am has just happened. No Half Life 2, so I guess it slipped, or perhaps another case of not being able to see beyond your own continent.

The water looks great, as does the lighting. Pretty.

I especially like the Half Life 1 helicopter tribute shot!

mmm wide screen goodness

Far Cry throws HL2 out the door. Because they took so long, the game won't seem good anymore when it DOES come out. They'll sell half as many copies as they could've. Idiots.

Do your really expect anyone to believe your predictions?

Yes...and the psp will kill the gba ...hhahaha
#10.6 JimmyT on 29 Apr 2004 - 15:14
I agree with you. I was waiting to buy HL2 because of the incredible realistic physics, the interaction with everyhting in the map and the beautiful graphics.
Now, after I've seen Far Cry and even Painkiller, HL2 seems like "just another game", and from those screenshots I can see that FarCry has better graphics. (Look and compare the egde of the water in the shore at one of those screenshots, and compare it to FarCry's waters"
Maybe those screenshots were taken at medium quality graphics...

All I want to see now is Halflife 2 with BETTER graphics than those screenshots, and the only thing that will impress me is for the game to have better engine than FarCry's, and to be not so demanding as this one.
I want to be able to play the game @ full graphics @ my 2600mhz cpu/512mb ram/radeon 9800.
#10.7 Dashel on 29 Apr 2004 - 18:04
Man, you whiney little ****tards just don't quit do you.
#11 Dirk on 29 Apr 2004 - 07:55
Yes because those pictures had to be taken in the highest quality possible and there is tons of aa and everything else in those screen shots...
#12 LiGhTfast on 29 Apr 2004 - 08:29
Looks pretty bad now, far cry is better looking

Im waiting for battlefield2 anyway, that will be the king

I would love to get the game, but prob is I'm poor, only make $6.75 an hr for 40 hrs a week, it's enuff to pay for my rent, food, gas for my car, utilties, etc. and my EQ fix.

By the time it comes out, of course, my machine won't have the horsepower to handle it!

Hope I land a better job someday soon.

#13.1 Philip Hristov on 29 Apr 2004 - 13:11
Gosh, We here in Bulgaria recieve $6.75 per day!!! So do not think you are very poor. And here it is no matter that you are pizza boy or computer specialist you always get $6-7 per day.
#13.2 chickemoney on 29 Apr 2004 - 18:47
move
#13.3 JaggedFlame on 30 Apr 2004 - 01:45
You can also buy more with $6 in Bulgaria than you can in the US.

Hmmmm... Nothing impressive, sorry!
Doom III looks much much more interesting.
#16.1 ANova on 29 Apr 2004 - 10:44
Doom 3 has fancy graphics, and that's about all. I wouldn't call HL2's run of the mill either. It uses 1000+ PS2.0 shaders typically.
#16.2 Radium on 29 Apr 2004 - 10:52
Doom III has a really impressive engine, while Half-Life 2 have a story.
Seriously, the enviroment in Half-Life 2 looks really ugly to me. There are too many flat surfaces, like Half-Life, but better texturing and models.
#16.3 ANova on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:07
I've looked at the capabilities of both and the Source engine is much more impressive imo.
#16.4 donachello on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:09
Well we have a few Engines to play with this year Havoc CryEngine and X-Ray are all good engines X-Ray is going to break some boundries... Havoc has the physics which brings it to the top of the class. for now...
#16.5 virtorio on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:10
Since when was Half-Life about graphics? Look at the original Half-Life, there were much better looking games at its release, but nobody cared as it had a superior story line and atmosphere. I hope they can re-create that with Half-Life 2.
#16.6 lnatan25 on 29 Apr 2004 - 14:13
Right, as Legend managed to recreate the original Unreal atmosphere.
You see, the case with HL2 is the same: Very high expectations, probably almost none fulfilled.
In Doom III's case, there are no atmospheres to recreate, but a new one to be created, and that's the point where HL2 will fall!
#16.7 virtorio on 29 Apr 2004 - 22:07
You have a point, but there is something Half-Life 2 have that Unreal 2 didn't have. And that is the orignal developers including the story line writers. There is no possible reason why it shouldn't be just as good as the orignal.
(1 reply) #17 donachello on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:06
oooh more pictures... I just hope Gabe Newman keeps his word and this is release this year because there are some conflicting rumours around at the moment wheather this is being release this year... Gme still have TBC on their release date sheets the same for Game Station... All we can is pray for a release this year... and hope
#17.1 Blax on 29 Apr 2004 - 14:48
Lol, dont count on that being the real release for too long...you know valve.
#18 Varsity on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:22
Dunno why they turned down the quality in those shots. Perhaps they're hiding a huge graphical overhaul that will be unveiled at E3..

Yeah, the level design sucks. That's because of Valve's 'pipeline' production method that means levels develop over time from ugly concepts to the final design.
#19 Ficman on 29 Apr 2004 - 11:58
Half Life Forever is really getting old, and it's not even out...
#20 lexor on 29 Apr 2004 - 12:03
does anyone else think that the new screenshots make it look like Painkiller (industrial levels)? considering that they both use Havoc physics, and similar graphics I'm not sure where HL2 will innovate.
#21 Sub on 29 Apr 2004 - 12:06
Sorry..Too little too late.... Half-Life was supposed to be a revolutionary game. But with games like Far Cry, Maxpayne 2 and others, Half-Life 2 is just another FPS....
#22 Rudzer on 29 Apr 2004 - 12:26
Are this new screenshots suposed to be impressive? cause they surely didn't impressed me!

umm... the ground textures suck. look at the first screen shots. the leafs :-/

and the water isn't crashing into the cement. hmmmmmmmm...

the humans/aliens/enemys are impressive and look very flexible, but the environment im not really digging.
#24.1 pxleyes on 29 Apr 2004 - 14:55
Those aren't leaves. That looks like some sort of goo.

The water is calm, so of course it wont be crashing into anything.
#25 DodgeViper on 29 Apr 2004 - 14:10
I hope it comes to the xbox.
#26 yert* on 29 Apr 2004 - 14:43
Looks good enough for me, I am definately buying this game
#27 djesteban on 29 Apr 2004 - 15:11
ok... first this is getting stupid....
IMHO they should think about redoing it entirelly.
Seriously, the screenshots looks empty, and the textures... well damn I've seen a lot better.
I don't know if valve has looked has farcry (and i'm not saying that the storyline is good here) but at least for the in-game environment (tecturing, sfx, modeling, etc.)
and if you've already played the alpha, you know there's nothing really innovative in the game play (same linear storyline, F6 to save, F7 to load, etc.)
anyway i'm getting it for free (ATI) so I can'T complain really.... but i've been a fan of the first half life and i'm really disapointed to see that this sequel will just be "another" game on the market.
Anyone looked at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ?? THIS is innovative and Valve should be jaleous because the in-game and graphics looks waaaaaay better than HL2.
#28 MrMunka on 29 Apr 2004 - 15:47
Ok first off, It sadens me to see so many people so concerned that the graphics won't be better that the next game. I could give a **** about graphics, if the game is not fun, and keep me wanting to play, then I will NOT spend money on it. I say delay the **** out of Half-Life 2 and work on the replayability of it, and not just multiplayer.

I have to agree with djesteban, Stalker is one amazing sounding game. They have pushed the bounds of AI, added random quest generation, giving it replay value, something that hardly any game in the last 5 years has had.
#29 Liquid on 29 Apr 2004 - 17:45
have any of u seen the water in HL2! Its amazing!
#30 i like chips on 29 Apr 2004 - 17:47
lol, what's with the graveyard scene? that's some funky ****.
#31 SyntheticDarkness on 29 Apr 2004 - 17:48
COME on guys by no means am i a Half-Life Fan but Does anyone recall a game that is still going strong and probably has more players THan Far Cry, Yeah thats right Half life and its mods... This game is going to be fun as hell shooting the **** out of Aliens it looks sweet the are also doing what half life one had the events thing when you get near a cart it may explode or something the AI is also going ot be pretty cool, My point is that its Just not about the graphics ,GAMEPLAY, but yeah the graphics are still up to date, but you guys are right they will soon not be, if they take any longer
#32 OfF3nSiV3 on 29 Apr 2004 - 18:05
i haven't fully played farcry yet..i played it a bit on a friend's pc, and i can't see no difference between it's graphic some other game..so i don't know why people keep saying that farcry has the best graphics bla bla
from what i saw, farcry has a lot of campaigns, so no continuous story line, of which HL2 has..HL2 seems to have very good physics though..so i think HL2 will be much better than any game (execpt doom3 - nothing beats those graphics (ok, maybe unreal3) and it seems to have a strong storyline and atmosphere) and about it's graphics, i don't have a pc capable of running everything at max so i don't give a **** about it..
#33 sputnik on 29 Apr 2004 - 19:03
interesting creature.

#34 FudgeMonkey on 29 Apr 2004 - 19:33
I got PCZone magazine in the UK today and they have an "exclusive" play of 3 levels and questions with Doug Lambrini who says that they are looking at a summer release and will make an announcement at this years E3
#35 ANova on 29 Apr 2004 - 19:36
What a bunch of whiny kids. If you all really think HL2 is that terrible, without even having played it of course, then don't buy it and don't bitch and complain, because I certainly don't want to hear it.
#36 INFERNO2k on 29 Apr 2004 - 19:54
Congratulations to all of you whom are not true gamers.

Gameplay > Graphics.

Shame on you for judging a game thats not released yet entirely on its graphics.
#37 Ficman on 29 Apr 2004 - 21:20
Probably means there is another delay...lol
(3 replies) #38 lnatan25 on 29 Apr 2004 - 21:26
It is going to be another Unreal-2-like failure... The expectations are too high, and when the game comes out, even if it's decent, it will be badly criticized.
#38.1 [saint dark] on 29 Apr 2004 - 21:36
maybe you are too young to remember, but the first one was hyped exactly like this and it was a huge success
#38.2 demorgoron on 29 Apr 2004 - 23:45
its going to be 10 times better than the original

I think that HL2 will suffer the daikatana effects (take time to put the game in the market -> game is outdated).
In fact, now HL2 seem outdated!
