[UPDATE] After a year of development hell, Warner Bros. loses rights to the shooter-inspired project. However, who exactly is making the film is unclear.

For once, the latest development in game movie news is not John Woo-related. The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported that the long-delayed Doom movie has switched studios after lingering at Warner Bros. for nearly 18 months. According to the terms of the contract between id Software and Warner Bros., if no progress had been made on the film after 15 months, the film rights to Doom would revert back to id.

[UPDATE] Although Warner Bros. had a completed script for Doom, id preferred to take the project elsewhere. However, exactly where the film is headed is now in doubt. Both the Reporter and Variety reported that Universal Studios picked up the project today to be the feature debut of commercial and music video director Enda McCallion. Both papers also reported that Lorenzo di Bonaventura and John Wells will produce the project under the supervision of Scott Stuber, Universal's vice chairman of worldwide production.

maybe this was a good idea, the last couple of games to movies wasnt that good.
#8.1 Milliamp on 06 Jun 2004 - 02:47
This is what I was thinking, even Resident Evil was horrible and it had all the potential not to be considering the game had a pretty good plot.
But Doom? Is there any room at all for Doom to be anything but bad?
#8.2 EugeneE3RD on 06 Jun 2004 - 04:22
Speaking of the Resident Evil movie, Well , George Romero (the king of zombie flicks) was hired to direct the movie but was fired because the film company complained the Romero wanted to make Resident Evil into a zombie movie. Duh, Resident Evil is about zombies, talk about a stupid film company.

Dont forget there is a second Resident Evil movie coming... this summer i think?

Movie rating is NEVER determined until the movie is near complete. It's impossible for them to rate the movie based solely on the script.
#10.5 el22 on 06 Jun 2004 - 06:00
But the filmmakers can estimate what rating they want to reach

#12 lostspyder on 06 Jun 2004 - 04:15
Man this movie is going to suck. Im shorry, but it has to, there isnt a chance in hell (get it hell??) that this mopvie will be entertaining.
#13 rah2 on 06 Jun 2004 - 07:12
As long as its done correctly. There have been far to many games to movies (or vice versa) that have gone badly.
#14 Mav Phoenix on 06 Jun 2004 - 07:58
The odds are against it being a good movie, but I look forward to it.

If I could choose, I would rather have a Max Payne movie than a Doom Movie.

But a Doom movie would be sweet as well. Let's hope it doesn't turn out to be like many many other game based movies.
#15.1 whYeNQue on 06 Jun 2004 - 10:55
YEH BABY! MAX PAYNE MOVIE! i dont care even if the script was lifted straight from the game... just make the damn film
#16 kairon on 06 Jun 2004 - 13:11
A Vice City movie needs to be made, now.

#18 The Gauge on 07 Jun 2004 - 09:35
I think any attempt to turn this game into a film is ultimately doomed (boom boom). It would contain nothing that hasn't been done better before a multitude of times, would need to contain significant amounts of extreme physical violence and graphic content, and simply due to the nature of its own popularity would never get released with an 18 certificate.

What we can look forward to is a toned down, moderately aggresive 15 certificate film with cynical and lame plot additions to pad out the destruction into something resembling a 90 minute film.

It's going to be crap. Why not just watch Aliens instead?

Oh come on - just dont make the lead Ben Affleck and it'll be fine.
