The Rock will not star in Doom movie

The Rock will not play the central role in the forthcoming Doom movie, id Software reps confirmed over the weekend, although it's possible that he will figure in some way. Speaking at QuakeCon during a Q&A session, id staff commented on recent reports concerning Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock's involvement, which originated with UK film magazine Empire.

According to reps, he will not play Doomguy, but it is possible that he could take on the role of a Sergeant if he does come on board - although, as reported at the time, that all depends on whether the John Woo-helmed adaptation of the Spy-Hunter game is pushed back or not.

id reps also confirmed that the movie script is almost finished, but very little other work has been done yet. The developer is reportedly happy with it at this stage though - we just hope it's a bit better than the infamous Doom comic that we found in our id Anthology box sets in the late 90s. The pain still burns inside us.

Meanwhile, QuakeCon attendees were also brought up to date on some other aspects of Doom III's continued development. According to reports, the Software Development Kit (SDK) is due a few weeks after the game's first patch (although who knows when that will arrive), the Linux server is done and the client is due soon, the Mac port isn't finished and has no publisher attached right now, and the Doom III Xbox is due "when it's done". No surprises there then.

Such moves are widely seen as an effort by SCEE to complement its already impressive internal development capacity by cultivating a Nintendo-esque network of "second party" studios - a move which not only guarantees continued support for existing platforms, but also gives the company an assurance of high quality early titles for its future systems.

"We've enjoyed an unparalleled working relationship with Evolution Studios over the past 4 years," according to SCEE's executive vice president for development, Phil Harrison, "and the quality of their work on the WRC franchise can be measured by the millions of loyal fans who love the series. This strategic alliance allows our organisations to work even more closely together as we prepare for the combined challenges of new formats and expanded game design horizons."

Evolution Studios was founded in 1999 by Digital Image Design founder Martin Kenwright (who is now managing director of the company) and Psygnosis founder Ian Hetherington, and has developed three successful titles in the World Rally Championship series for SCEE. Last year, the firm revealed plans to expand the studio through the establishment of satellite studios under the "Devolution" programme; BigBig Studios was the first studio to come under the auspices of this plan.

Damn man...Either the Rock or Vin Diesel!!!

Those guys would rock the Doom movie!
#4.1 T-Metal on 16 Aug 2004 - 15:11
Exactly. Doomguy needs to be a muscular figure like Vin Diesel or The Rock, not a pretty boy such as Ben Affleck and the like.

Nowadays does anyone smell what The Rock is cooking anymore??
(2 replies) #16 Magallanes on 16 Aug 2004 - 16:07
The Rock rulz!

Is fairly better that the many actors, many actors or their are gays (Di Caprio) or their boring to death (Tom Hawks for example), or their actuation really stinks (for example Russel Crowe cause he's happy, angry or sad he always show the same face! ) or tried to be funny (Bill Murray, Robin Williams..).

So, The Rocks is not a bad actor, of course he's not as good like Bruce Willis or Will Smith.
#16.1 riahc3 on 16 Aug 2004 - 16:44
Tom Hanks is a great actor (not for this movie tho) so i dont know wtf ur talking about. Crowe is also a actor that really plays his part out. Bull Murray is funny in most his movies and Roben Williams is OK but i personally like more Adam Sandler, Chris Rock type comedy. Bruce Willis is a great actor no doubt and so is Will Smith (although i hate him 100% as a person but thats a personal opinion of course)
#16.2 Chicane-UK on 16 Aug 2004 - 17:33
Robin Williams and Bill Murray 'trying' to be funny? Tom Hanks being a 'boring' actor?

Look - no offence Magallanes but just because you might not have any films of theirs that you rate, you can't be that naive to think that they have not made or been in any good films?!

Just off the top of my head - Ghostbusters & Ghostbuster 2, Good Morning Vietnam, Apollo 13, The Burbs, The Dead Poets Society, Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump?!

Sheesh. And you can't seriously be telling me that you consider The Rock to be a better actor than Hanks / Williams / Murray? I've flushed away turds that could act better than him!!

Two points:

#1. No one could see the Doom movie because it would be too dark.
#2. The Rock should make the last Conan movie. That would be cool.
(1 reply) #21 ABC½ on 16 Aug 2004 - 16:40
No need of a Doom movie.

ABC and a half!

Who died and made you Einstein?
#22 rec_kris on 16 Aug 2004 - 17:27
the rock is awful. he is a terrible actor who would stare into the camera mid-action sequence and say " looks like i'm really doomed ! " and then smile and put a new clip in his gun. or something extremely lame to that effect.

Henry Rollins who should have been the Punisher, would make an excellent lead in the Doom movie.
(1 reply) #23 qdave on 16 Aug 2004 - 17:29

The Rock's a good guy. I like him. The best is when he was on Saturday Night Live as Superman. Oh yeah, that was good.

2 words russel crowe or brad pitt. seein them in gladiator and troy, would make them a good hero

Agreed.
#29 threedaysdwn on 16 Aug 2004 - 19:54
This is random, but I nominate Richard Dean Anderson.
Though now that I think about it, he'd probably make a better Duke Nukem.

Oh yeah, and since when is Doom 3 a "Spy-Hunter" game?
#30 O'Connor's a Nub on 16 Aug 2004 - 20:02
What a shame
#31 RangerLG on 16 Aug 2004 - 20:12
The doomguy never talks anyway. I'm thinking Samuel L. Jackson myself.
#32 Ivand on 16 Aug 2004 - 20:57
the obvious choices are him and diesel, I dont see anybody else out there
#33 Sage_Override on 17 Aug 2004 - 03:56
Butterbean or King Kong Bundy would make excellent leads.

Imagine it.....a big f*cking boxer guy that could squash you in one hit carrying around a big honkin' chaingun blasting fire hurlin' monsters. Doesn't get much better than that.
