The promised playable demo for Half-Life 2 is now available, allowing you to sample the recent acclaimed first-person shooter sequel by Valve Software. This humongous demo "takes players through some of the early levels of the game and later transports them to the area of the game known as Ravenholm" but requires a Steam account to install.

Minimum System Specs:
  • 1.2 GHz Processor
  • 256MB RAM
  • DirectX 7 capable graphics card
  • Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
  • Mouse
  • Keyboard
  • Internet Connection (broadband connection recommended)

Cont...

In its twenty year history Reflections has created a number of break-out hits, including the Destruction Derby titles for the PlayStation, famous Amiga action title Shadow of the Beast, and, of course, the Driver series, whose success led Atari to acquire the studio in 1998.

The most recent title in the Driver series, Driv3r, was Atari's biggest commercial hope for this year, but the game launched to hugely polarised critical reaction - ultimately leading to allegations from some quarters that the firm had offered bribes or marketing deals in return from high review scores from certain publications.

HAHA your loss then oh and theres a reason HL2 says most anticipated pc game release of all time. that statement will remain true untill hl3. I dont think ill ever see a blizzard game get that kinda statement. some of them have been good so not to sound like im trolling i really like a few of their games its just hl2 > all blizzard games.
#3.2 Mav Phoenix on 21 Dec 2004 - 21:50
I guess you haven't seen the sales for WoW.
#3.3 MegaManXcalibur on 21 Dec 2004 - 22:50
Just wait until Blizzard announces a new StarCraft strategy game. I'm sure that would certainly be a canidate for the next mostly anticipated game of all time.
#3.4 Snuffy22 on 21 Dec 2004 - 23:20
hahaha, divertom15 where do you get your facts from, a cracker box???
WOW sold way more then HL2 and even has more players
but if you really want to get into it, "the sims2" is the most highly anticipated pc game so far, personally i hate it, but the sims is the most popular game in the world, so next time, do some reasearch and not just go with what your mates and your local pc magazine say
lll lllll LLLLL LOOOOOSER

You all also have to remember that Steam was totally crap coded. It just plain sucks. That may explain the reason it has fewer users.

Steam is great. I love it.
#3.7 cheesegoduk on 22 Dec 2004 - 19:17
HL2 was nothing special, other than the graphics which were very nice
#4 pb186 on 21 Dec 2004 - 19:37
since you have to activate it using steam you may as well download it from there too.
#5 beardly on 21 Dec 2004 - 19:39
Steam isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It is a lot better way of sending out updates than most software.

Nearly 800mbs. Thats HUGE. How many levels included?
#6.1 Radium on 21 Dec 2004 - 19:53
The arrival to City 17, you can walk around in the station and in a small part of the city.
Then you jump to Ravenholm, where you play until you get to a church, it takes time.

It's pretty short, but long enough if you want to test your system.

man alive, you guys are saying 800MB...when I looked at downloading it, it was telling me it was going to be about 3.5GB (the size of the complete game I think).

If you guys are right about the size, maybe I'll give it a go. Like Radium said:

I'm planning on getting HL2, but it would have to be on my PC rather than my laptop, so I'll want to test the PC out first. This will be a good way.

There's no real fire fight... it's just you and some slow and fast zombies. So I don't really think that the demo will push our systems far enough.
There are stuttering problems in the demo too. I don't know if they solved that in the full version, but the demo should have all the patches etc.

Look out for those black headcrabs.

To be able to show the frame rate, add this to the command line in Steam:
-console
Then change cl_showfps to 1.

Been playing the demo for a while and I have to say: Can't wait for Christmas! Ravenholm scares the crap out of me, though. Crazy headcrabs come out of nowhere.

HL2 is great... once you remove Steam. And yes, I have a legal copy of the game, and no, it's not worth it to play online since it's just HL2DM and CS, and it is laggy.
