Actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed more information on the upcoming Doom film, based on id Software's hit franchise. Johnson, who was on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart promoting the film Be Cool, was prodded by Stewart about another upcoming project.

"The film is Doom," admitted Johnson, "We just wrapped it." After Stewart asked the part-time WWE wrestler if he played a "creature," Johnson responded, "No, I'm the one," to which Stewart elatedly brought his hands to his face and screamed, "You're the dude!"

Confusion as to whether The Rock or actor Karl Urban of the Lord of the Rings trilogy fame would be the film's main star still remains. Urban's character, John Grimm, is the leader of a special-operations group that includes Johnson's character, listed only as "Sarge." The Rock was earlier quoted by Empire Online as saying, "Without giving the movie away, I play the ultimate [censored]. It'll be great. But you don't know I'm [censored]."

Taking much of its inspiration from the PC game Doom 3, the film will take place in a paramilitary research facility on Mars, where things go awry and hell is literally raised. Some theories say that the Rock is actually Satan in disguise, which would tie in to the film and game's devilish setting.

Johnson let on about his excitement for the film. "Here's the great thing about Doom... It's rated 'R,' it's unapologetic, just like the video game. I love blowing [expletive] up, and in this movie..." Johnson also gave details about the legendary BFG, calling it a "bio-force gun," rather than the more profane term gamers pegged the acronym as standing for.

Doom the movie is expected to hit the screen in August and is being directed by Cradle 2 the Grave director Andrzej Bartkowiak. Contrary to earlier reports by id Software, the film is indeed being developed by Universal Pictures and will costar Die Another Day's Rosamund Pike in a less villainous role.

Doom 3 was released on the PC last August, and an Xbox version will hit shelves April 3.

i thought it was gonna be about zombies in another gay resident evil suck fest.

this is good news, despite that the rock isn't the best actor.

Going by the game.. a top tier actor isnt needed.. just run around with various guns with the OCCIASIONAL "Damn that hurt" "<random doom phrase>"

Not really expecting much in the way of this movie but some cool special effects.

at the premiere in Sacramento. CA a TV reporter said the rocks character in the film seem a little feminine and the Rock got really mad....the dumbass. He wasnt talking about the Rock he was talking about his character. dont get mad if you play a gay or feminine person in the movie..."know your role" and he knew it, why get so mad...why Rock

"The film is Doom," admitted Johnson

No, not really.

It seems to be planned to be a zombie flick much like the Resident Evil movies, or maybe sort of 28 Days Later.

For example:
- The monsters are not coming from hell, they'll be humans infected by a virus.
- There are therefore no "demons".
- It's not taking place on a base on Mars.
- They are not space marines, but more like SWAT members.

Suddenly, I'm not very excited about this flick anymore...
And "The Rock" is going to star it? Ick...

But it should be mentioned that it was never the goal of anyone involved in this film, from myself and the producers to the studio to the guys at id, to make a direct film adaptation of the game(s).

... so sayeth the script writer.

In that case, everything the script writer and the producers have agreed about earlier was wrong. In different interviews, in different sources, even. Hm... They even explicitly say in the sources above that they "could never top the atmosphere in Doom 3" and are mostly trying out something like Doom with a few twists. I don't like the sound of that. But we're supposed to love it still. Hmm, I wonder how he knows what I'll think about it.

I know where the info ABOVE is from, but I wonder if what GameSpot wrote is speculation/conclusions on their part -- "obviously it'll be based on Doom 3" or whatever. :-/ I noticed what they wrote were not put in quote marks for example, so I'm unsure about where they got that from.

Yup, that is the reason I found this even funnier as a posted article.
This movie is going to be so much like Resi Evil, it might aswell have Mr Anderson as writer and Uwel Boll as director!

Christopher Walken needs to be the "one."

"Hey...YOU...I'm gonna smash your face IN! Touch me AGAIN...and it'll be your LIFE that I TAKE!"

The Rock is going to star as "Sarge" and use the bio-force-gun (BFG). Rock on.
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by Valkyre on 07 Mar 2005 - 01:33
Actually the BFG stands for "big ****ing gun".

If Dwayne doesn't have any lines, then he would fit the Doomguy's roll perfectly.

Whoever is going to play the main character won't change the fact that's it's absolutely not a movie based on the actual/accurate Doom atmosphere,... "Doom" title is just to attract people!

ABC and a half!
