Neversoft has dropped online play from the PlayStation 3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8, a key third-party launch title for Sony's next-gen console. The developer has only recently received development kits for the PlayStation 3 and has not had time to implement online play ahead of the consoles' US and Japanese launch in November, according to an article on IGN.

Neversoft was the first developer to offer online play for the PlayStation 2 with the launch of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 in October 2001, well ahead of Sony's official online service. Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the Xbox 360 will support up to eight players online, as well as other features over the Xbox Live service. Activision was unable to offer comment at the time of writing.

I don't think that Tony Hawk's Project 8 is the final title, more of a tentative internal name. But anyways, this news somewhat baffles me, as Insomniac Games seems to have no problems running Resistence: Fall of Man online with 40+ players at once. Neversoft is losing their touch apparently...

And Insomniac being a sony in house developer probably didn't have much earlier access to dev kits? you think ?

Insomniac is not a Sony owned Developer. Insomniac work closely with Sony but they are 2 seperate companies.

That still doesn't stop the fact that they probably got their dev kits before Neversoft did. Insomniac ONLY develops for Sony after all and they need a decent launch title.

Just wanted to let you all know that I'm flying down to the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) to work on a commercial for the new PS3 tomorrow. I'll be back in 2 weeks with some info. FWIW, I work in the entertaiment industry. I'm sure they'll have NDA's for us, but, we'll see......

This is just sad. Supposed to be a key third-party launch title for PS3, and they "only recently" received dev kits? What did they expect?

What else 3rd party developers won't be adding multiplayer since they recieved their kits late then? :/

I think Sony's golden touch has faded.

XBOX 360 is still my fav.

More like it (Sony's "golden touch" has torched itself, not unlike their laptop batteries...

I like the PlayStation, I love the PS2 even more.

But I'm not really impressed with the PS3 so far. It sounds good on paper, but the price is extortionate, and it doesn't look as if it's going to be as innovative as the competition.
