The PS3's remote control surfaces

The Playstation 3 Magazine exposed a picture of the new remote control to be shipped with Sony's PS3. There's not much else to write about this, so I'll quote the magazine writers directly: "Oh, and here's a picture of the PS3 remote control. It uses Bluetooth rather than infrared - meaning that you can use it behind a cushion. Another Sony first. Who said they'd lost it eh?"

Does it look ugly or something for your living room? The bluetooth connectivity sounds interesting though.

Not ugly, but not beautiful. It looks just like any other (normal) remote control.

It doesn't look like a normal remote control. It has this ugly retro look. Square buttons and a bunch of clashing colours is a no-no today.

If 1995 is retro. Looks pretty modern to me. Most high end equipment is like this, with a form follows function philosophy.

Blue, red, green and yellow buttons are retro.

I know that if you look at the modern receiver/remote, form does follow function, but rounding buttons doesn't exactly make a remote harder to use. If you take a look at high end receivers, they are starting to keep function while still looking good. A nice example is Harmon Kardon, which has some of the nicest looking receivers that I've seen.

And even if high end equipment looked like that, the PS3 isn't appealing to the high end crowd, they are trying to appeal to the stylish, fashion oriented crowd, the same people that would buy the PSP over the original DS because of its looks. While some people may not like the look of the PS3, the whole matte black with silver trimming look is very stylish and it is something that I would display proudly on my AV rack, this remote is somethign that I would hide. I have a Sony universal remote right now, and while it isn't high end, it does have macros and whatnot, and it looks a hell of a lot better than this.

Nice Nintendo logo!

Bluetooth! So it doesn't even work with Universal Remotes...

I believe LeeŽ mixed up the images when posting this and the 360/Wii graphics comparison articles, cause that one has an image of a playstation controller.

I have no control over what logo is used within an article. That is for the news moderators.

Naw, the news mods don't have control over that. You'd need to talk to a news poster.

But... isn't leeŽ the news poster? Does this mean there's some surreal power that assigns to logo to articles? I knew there was an omnipotent being behind neowin!

Jeez, way too many buttons! What happened to just needing play, pause, stop, rewind and fast forward?

And if it just had play, pause, stop, rewind, and fast forward your ass would complain that it has too few buttons.

Man all this console hating is getting boring...

Are you kidding? I'm a big fan of Apple's Frontrow remote. Even a DVD player shouldn't need many more buttons than that. I'm not "console hating", I want a PS3 quite a lot, but I don't want to have to spend a minute looking at the remote to figure out which button I need to press.

Well, see, if the functions aren't there, they aren't available. Loss of functionality sucks, and menu surfing also sucks.

Functions? I wasn't aware you needed 40 buttons to watch a video.
Honest question, what do all the buttons do? Do Blurays have more function than a current-gen DVD, is there more than just the film and the usual "extras" we get?
#3.5 Abnil on 09 Oct 2006 - 12:34
Direct TV Satillite Remotes come with the 4 colored buttons, and their remote is anything but retro. and Many of the functions will be used by people, such as Slow mo, Skip to Previous/Next Chapter, Multiple speed Fast Foward/Rewind, among others. Just because you wont use a feature, doesnt mean that other people wont.

Looks very much like the remotes we have for the in store Sony TVs at work :|
#4.1 cjphilogelos on 08 Oct 2006 - 20:59
Yeah, looks like every remote Sony has come out with for the past 10 years. I think this thing was just an after thought, and very poorly thought out.
#5 Colicab on 08 Oct 2006 - 15:58
Ah the Nintendo PS3

#6.1 chicken-royal on 08 Oct 2006 - 18:04
Just what I was thinking, it looks very outdated in comparison with the PS3 and modern remotes.
#7 chris4 on 08 Oct 2006 - 19:23
Eww.
#8 cheesegoduk on 08 Oct 2006 - 19:58
meh, no real change from the PS2 Remote really....
#9 Munkyman on 08 Oct 2006 - 21:15
Sony, no expense spared.
(1 reply) #10 jb23fan on 08 Oct 2006 - 21:22
Please note, the version pictured is the "Deluxe version" which includes batteries. This version will cost 149.99, whilst the "standard" version which does not include batteries, and is corded, costs 148.99 :p
#10.1 DemonicHawk on 09 Oct 2006 - 21:41
ahahahahaha that makes it even better! nice stuff sony! keep up the good work!
#11 Julius Caro on 08 Oct 2006 - 22:43
If it's bluetooth they could've come up with something more better looking and less "remote control" like. Since bluetooth wouldn't need to point out at the console...
#12 Dazog on 08 Oct 2006 - 22:54
HAHA this looks like it came from 1989

Oh wait Sony says its the best remote ever

I stand corrected err I mean brainwashed....

Stop me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Wii's controller use bluetooth?

#15.1 DomG on 09 Oct 2006 - 03:04
No, it's a Sony first. The first time Sony have used a bluetooth remote control for their PS3.
[/sarcasm]

Seriously though, I think it refers to bluetooth in a media remote, and since the Wii won't be playing DVDs, it doesn't count.

Oh so it's a typo... It's a Sony's first. Haha!
#16 hackerssidekick on 09 Oct 2006 - 05:32
I thought that RF remotes could be used behind things as well ie no line of sight required? Sony first eh
#17 Colin-uk on 09 Oct 2006 - 15:01
1980 Called, they want their remote back
#18 beniza on 09 Oct 2006 - 23:52
they should have match it with their console color (black, silver, blue) with clear buttons that lights up white or green when u press them... shape doesnt really matter
#19 yert* on 11 Oct 2006 - 20:34
