The PS3 has become PAL’s fastest ever selling console, shifting 1 million units since its launch in March 10 weeks ago. This beats records previously held by the Playstation and PS2 and probably represents the importance of a better games line-up to launch consoles in.

As far as first-party software goes in PAL territories, Sony also confirmed to GameSpot that Resistance: Fall of Man was the top seller so far, having shifted some 600,000 units, and MotorStorm is revving in second place with a total of approximately 500,000 sales.

In April it was announced that the console had reached the 800,000 milestone, with CEO Howard Stringer commenting, "We came into the [European market] with more games, and perhaps we lived up to the expectations in Europe in a way that perhaps we didn't in Japan."

I've read the source three times now, and I just can't find anything that says it's PAL's fastest ever selling console. So this news here is not precisely correct. It just says it sold more than PS2 and PS.

I assume this "stat" came from Sony. The fastest ever selling console is the Wii, NOT the PS3. It says the PS3 sold 1 million units in 10 weeks. The Wii sold 2.5 million in less than 2 weeks!

Not in PAL regions...

The PS3 broke UK console records by selling 165,000 units in the first two days it was on sale in the UK

That one always cracks me up, they shipped 220,000 units and sold 75% (wow, that's a nice round number, lol) in the 1,000's of shops in the UK yet no one could find a single shop that had sold out of them.

You've gotta hand it to Sony, their marketing and logistics department must be the best in the world!

Sony have shifted 1 million consoles, we can see them sitting on the shelves in all the stores.

But is that SHIPPED units, or units actually SOLD at retail, Sony have a habit of counting sales as shipped units.
#4.1 soniqstylz on 10 Jun 2007 - 13:13
Yeah, Sony is the only company who does this
#4.2 Xero on 10 Jun 2007 - 17:27
Thats because Sony has sold them to whichever company ordered them. They made their money. Its now up to the store to sell them, so it is correct, cleverly put but it is true. The number of PS3's sold per item, I'm sure its much less. But what does that matter to Sony. The stores are overstocked

Whats that got to do with anything?

This news post is about Sony, Sony like to boast about shipped figures rather than actual units sold.

Do you not like the truth?

If this is the truth, then I no longer trust the truth because it decieves people
#5 vetcashman on 10 Jun 2007 - 12:13
I think they were shipping 1 million at launch weren't they? Or was that 600,000? Can't remember.

After some googling, I found these sales figures for the wii:

Quote -
Wii:

Global: 5.84m
Euro: 1.3m
UK: 438,000

Source: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/26994/Nintendo-h...-sales-revealed

Please note: These date back to May 11th and I cannot confirm the validity of them, but they seem accurate enough.

Anyhow, Europe is one big PAL region and this doesn't include Australia or the other little PAL regions dotted around the world. With nearly half a million Wii's being sold in the UK alone, I definitely wouldn't consider this articles findings to be any more than PR spin from Sony.

But, none the less, if these are actually SOLD PS3's (and not just shipped PS3's) then at least Sony isn't doing too horribly. But at the end of the day, the real results will come around Christmas time when the novelty aspect of the Wii has worn off and when all 3 consoles have a decent games lineup.

I'm still betting the PS3 will come in last.
#6.1 faraaz on 10 Jun 2007 - 21:45
maybe its fastest selling because PS3 was launched a few months ago and Wii was released wayyy back, but it still could be more PR crap from sony
#7 dagamer34 on 10 Jun 2007 - 15:29
Shifting is not the same word as selling. This is Sony PR spin!

haha.. who cares.

I both got a wii and PS3 in my room !! but no plan to buy any xbox-360 (which gotta fade out soon) !!!
among tones of my friends owns both wii and ps3 @ Hong Kong. But Not X-Box 360

but honestly speaking, Wii's game were fun when you play with a groups of people,
while PS3 gives me what the REAL reality game that i need !!
#8.1 faraaz on 10 Jun 2007 - 21:48
xbox 360 could beat the crap out of the PS3 any day, especially in graphics, the only thing better about PS3 is the processors (which makes them more useful as servers than as gaming rigs i work at EA, and i always see racks of PS3s in the server room lol)

You should stop playing games soo much and take a break to learn what you're talking about.

"xbox-360 (which gotta fade out soon)"

You're actually being serious. That small comment alone shows that you have no clue what you're talking about. From the way you post I'd say you're no older than 14.

Why? this is one of the greatest places to work. we have our own soccer field, two basketball courts, fitness centers, free massages, discounts everywhere (including outside EA), great pay and other benefits, and games as far as the eye can see

Don't bother replying man, it's not worth it. You don't need to explain yourself. Just remember the person on the other end is saying that over the internet from behind the safety of a monitor.

Quality > quantity, bud.

Sorry, but a large chunk of those are still sitting on store shelves. Until it's bought from the store and sitting in someones home being played, it dosn't count as a true sale. People need to stop using that as an excuse to try making the PS3 look like it's doing good when it clearly isn't.

The PS3 is a flop people. Some of you need to realize the truth in that and live with it. I'm no 360 or Wii fabnboy either so don't try starting any arguments that I am. It's just getting old seeing Sony trying anything they can to make the PS3 look better than it really is.
#9.1 kravex on 11 Jun 2007 - 08:42
I wonder how long before the large stores start telling Sony they don't want anymore as they already have them stocked up in their store rooms, that's when Sony will really be in trouble.
#10 obsolete_power on 11 Jun 2007 - 01:27
Lies....I am so sick of this crapola, we all know this is a pathetic overstatement made by Sony.
(3 replies) #11 ElementalDragon on 11 Jun 2007 - 06:22
Honestly the success or failure of the PS3 is basically banked on BluRay.... and BluRay.... kinda seems backed by the PS3. so if BluRay tanks.... chances are PS3 will too. if the PS3 tanks prior to the end of the format war... chances are BluRay will not win. from the get-go, the PS3 was... and i think maybe still is, the cheapest BluRay player available.

I agree with you 100%. The Hi-Def DVD war is far from over, though. The latest shot fired is WalMarts support of HD-DVD, and for those not realizing the impact of this:
Quote -
"Wal-Mart accounts for an astonishing 37% of what Hollywood puts on
DVD, a 3% increase in market share over last year, according to NPD
Group, which measures the home entertainment market. But revenues from
DVDs account for less than 2% of Wal-Mart's sales -- meaning Hollywood
needs Wal-Mart a lot more than Wal-Mart needs Hollywood."

"While many people have strong opinions of Wal-Mart, there is little
doubt of its retail power. Approximately 40% of all DVDs sold are sold
through Wal-Mart."
Source

Also, I believe that Sony has released their first BR player under $500 which is now the cheapest BR player.
#11.2 PeterTHX on 12 Jun 2007 - 02:48
Walmart isn't going HD DVD. They denied the earlier article.

Matter of fact, Funai, their main OEM supplier, announced that they will be shipping Blu-ray players to Walmart under several different brands in Q4 this year.

Walmart also recently announced new aggressive moves into Consumer Electronics, citing new SONY product lines.
#11.3 +Ironman273 on 12 Jun 2007 - 15:20
From everything I can see, the denial was for the cheap HD-DVD player, not for the format. Any sources? To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out not to be true, I'd just like to see a source.

Plus, there's that new article in the Main News.
