The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has topped a poll of readers of Edge magazine and industry experts to find the top 100 games of all time. The 10-year-old videogame for the Nintendo 64 games console helped usher in a new era of 3D gaming. It is also one of only five games ever to receive a 10 out of 10 review score from Edge magazine. Five of the top 10 titles were made only for Nintendo machines, including Super Mario 64, in third spot. The full list of 100 titles has been compiled for a special edition of Edge magazine. Tony Mott, editor-in-chief of Edge, said: "If you were new to video games and were going to go out and buy 100 games to make an instant collection, then these would be the games to buy."
He added: "Ocarina of Time is nearly 10 years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age. "In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance." Only one PC game makes the top 10 - classic first person shooter Half Life 2. Microsoft's Xbox also has only one representative in the elite list - with Halo: Combat Evolved at number seven. Only five games for the next generation of consoles have made the top 100 - Pro Evolution Soccer 6, at number 15, Oblivion, at number 19, Virtua Fighter 5, in 38th spot, Virtua Tennis 3 at number 80, and Crackdown at 100.

And FFXII is #8? Give me a break.

Pip'
Well, true, but I still think Ocarina of Time is worthy of being named greatest ever.

FFXII and Half-Life weren't innovators. I dispute your FF claim [
Well, I'm not sure if the list contains many "leaps in gaming" to be honest, but HL was quite innovative IMO because it was the first FPS with a cinematic story-line that actually worked. Before HL mosts FPS were just running around killing monsters and while HL basically is the same it added a lot more to it.
Anyway, with Halo at #7 it obvious the whole list sucks.

I agree. My favorite Zelda game was A Link to the Past (although I agree that most people think OoT is better). Games don't have to be innovative to be a great title. They're probably more likely to be successful because it's a fresh take but innovation doesn't guarantee it'll be successful.
Good question.
regardless, how the game ends shouldnt change the fact that both Half Life games have probably been the most cutting edge games of their time, and still deliver a more compelling story then any other FPS has yet to offer.
True, after beating it once you don't really get very pumped up about ever playing it again. I can't even bring myself to get the add-on's because I'm so sick of looking at my character and hearing the same stupid villagers voices.
however i do think Zelda Oot deserves the top spot . .
seriously. they better have put an "x" instead of a "v" by mistake.....
FF7 is the best RPG ever made (havn't tried oblivion yet though). and just one of the best games in general ever as well. it was revolutionary as well. it's a disgrace to not have it up there
ff7 is one of the most overrated games ever it wasnt revolutionary at all except for the "pretty graphics" it was a good game though.

It had a great story line and interesting gameplay but I still think FFVI (III) was better and more enjoyable to play. FFVII just added a lot of drama to the series (and drama is overrated itself).

that is pretty much what i think drama and pretty graphics
Well, I don't know because you have to buy the magazine to see the list. I call hype.
Go back, play it, and say that again.
If you still think Zelda's for kids go and play some Majora's Mask.
Chrono Trigger vs Zelda :
Music:
CT>Zelda. (the ocarina theme is nice but not compared with CT theme)
Story:
CT>Zelda. CT have a complex story, a lot of ending and many subplots (not mini-missions) also a lot of secrets.
Characters.
CT>Zelda. A Hero with the Dragonball's hair, a spoiled princess, a gadgeter girl, a cave-girl, a warm heart robot, a "yummy" frog and a badass guy vs a couple of elfs.
Funny Factor:
CT>Zelda

Wow dude... you summed it up nicely, I cant believe Chrono Trigger is not on that list! Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever... Everything about that game is excellent! I cant think of anything I would have changed in that game. It was perfection.
Or Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper... ah well, I know I liked them
Plus countless others
Nahh. I mean, I bought FFXII, and I sold it, AND I sold the machine with it! I was that disappointed with it.. I thought of it as my PS2's dying breath. :p
So It can't be that good.
2) Pilotwings 64
3) Starcraft
Half-life=overrated

LMAO that is the most stupid list I have ever seen.
Sorry, with everyone bitching about their favorite games that weren't mentioned, I felt like I should add more pointless whining to the conversation.
Anyways... Please, carry on.
Dungeon Master (1988 for Amiga)
Quake (1996)
BF2142
Berzerk (1980)
Archon (atari 8bit version)
Alternate Reality (Atari version - 1985)
Virtua Fighter 2 (haven't played 5 much yet)
Exodus Ultima III
Sim City
Total Annhilation
Mule (atari 8bit)
TomeNET
Ahh you can see I'm not much of a console gamer. HL2? That's the one game I didn't like and feel its over hyped just because it was a decent successor to a great game.

Seriously, that game is one terrible rehash of BF2 with pretty much the same bugs.
Q.Q
what a great ass game.
Old schoolers from a 1997 game? That's not old school IMO. To me, old school is if you played video games in the 1970s or earlier. Space Wars, Pong, etc etc. Those are old school in my opinion however I'm sure there are older people than I who played pinball before video games were out. Even a 1980s video game would be semi-old school to me, especially the early 80s.
And in case it wasn't a typo, well, the list is negated.
Ahh... memories....
Super Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Super Mario Bros 3
Pokemon Red/Blue
Half Life 2
Halo
Super Mario World
The Wind Waker
Sonic the Hedgehog
007 Goldeneye
I thought all those games were Brilliant, however i'm not decided about Goldeneye, I know it was groundbreaking and awesome back then, but having played it at the beginning of this year, well it was great, but nothing too special. I found the controls very complicated, and although it may have been a turn in FPS's, it doesn't play as well today as it probably did back then, however, I'd say all the rest on that list do, or will.
However, funny how the guy in the BBC report said "I hope to see more PS3 and Xbox 360 games". What about Wii? Wii has Twilight Princess, Sonic, and soon Mario and Metroid, among tonnes of others. And 360? That has Gears of War already, there are tonnes of classic games this generation, just...not on PS3.
