However, as any Command & Conquer fan knows, the true party starts today, August 31st, which marks 12 years since Command & Conquer Gold launched way back in 1995.

To kick the celebration off, today we have a special surprise which we are certain new and old Command & Conquer fans will enjoy. We are providing the original Command & Conquer Gold as a free download, compatible for Windows XP! This is the same version included with the collectors pack Command & Conquer: The First Decade, and is now available for you to download for free!

EA giving things for free? Not very usual but Cool anyway!!
I'm a big fan of the C&C series and I'm gonna start downloading this one right now.

whats the catch?
#2.1 NightmarE D on 01 Sep 2007 - 22:49
There is no catch. Game companies actually do this a lot on anniversaries of games. The only thing I can think of is that they'll only offer it for a certain amount of time.

Agreed, I'm pulling all of 20KB/s here

But nonetheless, nice one EA
#3 NightmarE D on 01 Sep 2007 - 22:50
The server is getting nailed right now. I was getting 10kb download speeds
#4 Makhaira on 01 Sep 2007 - 23:09
It's only offered for September, so get downloading!

Wait a minute now. Some kind of conspiracy going on here? Wasn't there a post saying that it was filled with ads?.

But I'm sure somebody will say something soon if there is.
#5.1 +Ironman273 on 01 Sep 2007 - 23:17
No. There are other games being offered by Fileplanet with ads (Ghost Recon, Prince of Persia, and Far Cry) but this is just being released for free since it's a 12 year old game. Basically it's just a marketing move to bring the name back in the news. No catch though.
#6 aNILEator on 02 Sep 2007 - 00:04
anyway to get it working on vista x64? I tried previously but failed, I think it was the 16bit code
#7 +Xerxes on 02 Sep 2007 - 00:58
Cool, too bad I already own the original C&C (DOS version) and C&C GOLD (getting it working in XP/Vista isn't that hard really anyway )
#8 +Dakkaroth on 02 Sep 2007 - 02:43
I believe Bethesda did this with their older Elder Scroll's series anniversary. Cool I suppose, though I already own them all.
(1 reply) #9 Code.Red on 02 Sep 2007 - 03:43
No mirrors? I'm getting a whopping 15kb/s.
#9.1 Code.Red on 02 Sep 2007 - 05:50
And now a nice file not found error.

What does GDI and NOD mean? What is the difference?
#10.1 +Xerxes on 02 Sep 2007 - 06:31
GDI = Global Defense Intiative and NOD = Brotherhood of NOD (or to many C&C fans, NOD = Nasty Obnoxious ********s ) they are the two waring factions in the game. The NOD disk is for the NOD singleplayer campaign and the GDI disk is for the GDI singleplayer campaign, back when it was first made, they couldn't fit all the singleplayer FMVs on the one disk (correct me if I'm wrong) so that is why there is 2 disks.

Just as a side note, it's "Nod" and not "NOD". Not trying to be a grammar nazi, it's just that some people think it's an acronym when it's just a name =P

FarCry is also out as is one of the Ghost Recon games (for free that is)
They are ad suported on the loading and menu screens, but other than that full games
#12 brent3000 on 02 Sep 2007 - 08:32
Love the game

LONG LIVE KANE
#13 Atlonite on 02 Sep 2007 - 09:37
the links dont work
#14 Osiris on 02 Sep 2007 - 09:40
I like this new approach. I resent ads being in games or on services I pay good money for, but in something free like this I have no problems with an 'ad supported' feature like the Farcry and Ghost Recon methods.

#15 TR1GG3R on 02 Sep 2007 - 09:57
all links 404
#16 brent3000 on 02 Sep 2007 - 11:29
thats what i get i think they underestimated how many ppl wanted it lol.. its been less than a week... they would not delete it would they?

EDIT i get all links working well the iSO if that yay...

Yeah I'm getting hammered on the d/l as well.

Guess I'll have to wait a couple of days until things calm down.

They really should torrent the files to aid everyone who wants them
#21 altermind on 03 Sep 2007 - 10:19

#22 night_stalker_z on 03 Sep 2007 - 19:55

...Tiberian sun 3?
You're clearly not a C&C fan.

Tiberian Sun was the SECOND Command & Conquer game in the (Tiberium) series. This game that's up for download was the first in the series and is sometimes referred to as "Tiberian Dawn".
The 3rd game was SUPPOSED to be called "Tiberian Twilight" and the last game, but once EA got ahold of it they wanted to milk it for all it's worth.
#25 Croquant on 04 Sep 2007 - 04:13
Sheesh. The server is still getting hammered. Anyone got any fast mirror links?
(3 replies) #26 semifamous on 05 Sep 2007 - 16:05
I think this is a game I've been trying to find.

I remember playing a game in which some commando started a mission alone and had to blow stuff up and would say such things as "I got a present for ya!" or "That was left handed" upon killing the enemy. I think this game is it. I'm going to have to install it and see if I can get there again.
#26.1 vetbangbang023 on 05 Sep 2007 - 22:36
I don't think you're thinking of the right game.

He is thinking of the right game, actually. It's the tenth (or thereabout) level in the GDI campaign, and the second level included in the demo that came out when the game was originally released in 1995.

I think I've been playing this game too much

#27 Ohwhyme on 08 Sep 2007 - 03:22

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/comman...tion/index.html

the graphics are very old school
#28.1 Mike Frett on 11 Sep 2007 - 16:12
Who cares if it's fun?. You guys need to get off this whole "graphics make the game" idea.
#29 +mrbester on 13 Sep 2007 - 12:28
^ the graphics are "old school" because it's 12 years old. How good were your VGA graphic skills 12 years ago?

Don't forget to play the Funpark levels where you get to kick dinosaur arse...
