Nintendo has announced that, according to sales tracking information released today by the NPD Group, the Wii has now become the best-selling videogame console in the United States.

The NPD Group reported more than 666,000 Wii consoles sold for the month of June, with nearly 10.9 million Wii consoles sold in the US since its November 2006 launch twenty months ago.

"Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales & marketing.

"As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another."

^It's only because of the devil they passed the 360. It even has his mark in the sales numbers!!! /sarcasm.

Six! Six! Six! The number of the Wii!

It's impressive to me how the Wii never seems to stay in stock, but can still outsell an item that is in good supply. I know it's all about Nintendo's interesting marketing approach, and it also makes sense that the Wii outsells the 360 because it is always out of stock, but it seems like the 360, with more model choices, would have combined numbers to beat the Wii. I guess not though!

I think that the Wii sells because it's just a fun console. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun playing video games with any member of my family. The system, once played, sells itself and that right there is how console gaming should be done, IMO.

As opposed to what? Selling because it's a boring console?

So it's Wii in first, Xbox 360 in second and PS3 in third.

Yeah, but it doesn't even come close to Sony which is in second place for software sales which is the really important matter financially. Who cares if you have sold more consoles, if you have an attachment rate of 3 games per console, compared to the Xbox 360's attachment rate of 7, you aren't going to win any time soon.

i totally agree with that! I work at GameStop and i guarantee if you take Wii Play out of that attachment rate it would be 2 games...9/10 times a person that comes in our store and buys a Wii gets Wii Play.

Yay for people who look beyond simple console sale graphs! Anyway, the attachment rate for Wii is 1 actually, because Wii Play really sucks and really isn't a GAME, and Wii Sports comes included with the console by default. Then people buy some other game like maybe Super Mario Galaxy or Mario Kart Wii or Brawl (depending on their style) and they don't buy anything else.

Most of my friends only bought a Wii for Wii Sports, and that game got old fast.

Hurray for generalising! I'm looking at my 5 games, plus the 2 you said don't count.

Wait, I got one; all online games are for zitty teens who think they're the hotness. See, I can do it too.

Haha nice but really I wasn't lying or generalising when I posted that. Look for yourself online.

You ARE generalising, though, because the people you know are most likely around your age and posting online about how bored they are with the Wii. The true majority of owners are nothing like you, and probably wouldn't know a web forum if it slapped them in the face.

This is old news, the Wii has always been the fastest selling and everyone knows it. Its cheaper, aimed at the casual gamer, and seems more innovative, no wonder the sales are first.

Can't believe that they're selling so many of these things with no games. Really odd.

Not really, it comes with Wii Sport -- the game everyone wants to play.

Mario Kart, that's all it needs. SSBB and Wii Play don't hurt either. I know, 3 games is a pretty weak lineup, but look who's buying the thing.

Sure beats the ... zero? games that I want to play on my ps3.

oh...no...wait... I'm having fun playing final fantasy 12 again after my PS2 bit the dust.

It's very simple: Everyone wants to play with their Wii.

Or just buy it because it's trendy and leave it collecting dust

No, that's just the "mature" teenagers doing that. Everyone else likes playing for a few minutes here and there, not living their lives playing video games.

My Wii is currently collecting dust.. primarily because I have a puppy. Any swinging action I do she tries to bite the controller.

Otherwise: Wii is fun for party gaming, other than that I am all over my PC.
