WipEout HD has yet to be released because of a "specific technical problem", but Sony hopes it will be out "before the end of the year".

"There is a specific technical problem with WipEout that we have to solve. I can't go into details but it is a really, really tricky technical problem that no region has been able to solve at the moment," Sony Europe boss David Reeves told us when we hassled him about the game's progress this week at LA.

"I think it will come out before the end of the year but it is something that was just very difficult to get to grips with."

Must be an extremely interesting one if a company like Sony can't solve it with all their resources.

I wish they'd elaborate further. Too bad every corporation is hellbent on glossing over truth with marketing-speak so they always look poised and confident, even when the problem consists of, "we can't get it to go over 45fps."

I doubt it's something as simple as framerate. The graphics certainly don't impress me much at all, so it's probably something else. They won't tell us exactly what the problem is because we don't need to know (none of your f_cking business), and even if he is technical enough to understand the problem, most people outside the project probably wouldn't. Would you really feel fulfilled if he had said, "We're having an issue with Gimbal lock despite using quaternions, and there are certain situations in the game that this occurs in and we can't seem to get around it?"

D'oh!

Everyone knows you can't solve a Gimbal lock with quaternions! you need to use a hyperspectropic thingymabob with a triple-point hoperscope!

This is planned to be the fourth game in the long-running series (and the second console-exclusive title in the series; the first two, the original and WipEout2047/WipEoutXL, also appeared on the PC). The console-exclusive WpiEout3 was also beset with delays and proved to be a rather ugly bomb (it was also the first version produced after the absorption of developer Psygnosis by SCEA). Apparently, SCEA is trying not only to rid itself of the bad reputation it picked up primarily due to WipEout 3, but to create a new flagship Sony-exclusive title.

I *still* remain disgusted with Sony for not bringing WipEout HD back to the PC (as good as the Playstation versions of both titles were, the PC versions actually didn't suck, which is not only rare for console ports even today, but was just as rare then). Since WipEout2047/WipEoutXL, the only truly futuristic racing title of its type to appear on the PC was the indie cult classic Ballistics (like the first two WipEout titles on the PC, this game was one I bought and enjoyed).

Until Sony proves itself (and WipEout 3 certainly was NOT it! with a solid racing title for the PS3 with all the wow and elan that the first two WipEout titles (for PC and PS) had, or that Ballistics (a PC exclusive) had, I will not even be remotely interested in the PS3.

They ate Psygnosis? That's sad. They made some awesome Amiga games...

Reportedly it's because it failed epilepsy tests, thus requiring a re-engineer before release. Not sure why they can't just put an extra warning on it, really...
