The 5.50 update for the Sony Playstation Portable has been released to the public, It can be obtained via the PSPs network update function or downloading via the internet via Sony, whose website will be updated soon to show the new Firmware.

Eric Lempel, Director of Playstation Netwrok operations, mentioned The Firmware update was to be coming soon on the US Playstation Blog which also has listed what features are contained within the update.

The Update brings the Information Board application, which much like the one on Playstation 3, creates a new ticker in the top right hand corner that links to an official Sony source of news for Firmware, Game releases and Playstation Store updates.

You will now also be able to create your own folders and sub-folders on the PSP's memroy card for your Music, Movies and Pictures.
This feature has also been asked for in an update for the Playstation 3 for those that want to organise their own collections within sub folders, but has yet to be added.

There are also two trials available with the update from Trend Micro for the PSP's web browser. The first being Trend Micro Web Security which helps block certain websites which might try and steal information from the user.

The second, Trend Micro Kids' Safety, that can be used to help parents block inappropriate content such as adult sites from their child web browsing.

Hmm... an update for the browser you say...

How about updating the browser itself Sony!?!?
It's totally useless in its current state and therefore already totally safe.

It's possible with some hackery to get Opera mini working on the PSP.

And Sony things the only people who modify their PSP are pirates....

PSP's are great for long journeys on trains/planes. Laptops are too big. I rarely touch the PSP when its at home but its an essential when travelling.
