Hollywood veteran Steven Spielberg expects to see the traditional home console die out, whilst virtual reality and 3D video games will make an emphatic comeback.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Spielberg boldly stated that he forecasts the conventional video game systems to go "the way of the Dodo bird," as well as declaring his preference for PC gaming.

"Now we're all playing at home and someday we'll be playing directly on our TV sets, bypassing all of the platforms," he said. "In the short term I would love to start seeing 3D games developed where with a good pair of glasses we get a real three-dimensional experience in front of an appropriate monitor that is designed just for 3D."

The director of Schindler's List and Jurassic Park has recently dabbled in video game production, with his Wii puzzle game Boom Blox being a surprise success both commercially and critically.

Spielberg's vision may seem like a lifetime away, but following the recent OnLive announcement it may become a reality sooner than we think.

Hmm... Predicting the death of console gaming the day after your new Wii game came out?

I don't see VR returning in any form of technology that exists yet. Maybe when you can get that jack installed in your skull...

This is also the man that thought Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was going to be "good". Aliens . . . need I say more?

Aliens are worse than the Holy Grail or the Ark of the Covenant? People didn't seem to mind them in Close Encounters, ET, and War of the Worlds--and the scene that was cut from Schindler's List when the aliens came down out of the wormhole created by the rabbi with his magical Kabbalah staff to fight the Nazis at Auschwitz.

The real problem with it was the CGI. It was another movie ruined by gratuitous CGI. You liked the old movies because they looked and felt "real." Maybe Spielberg should stop making his movies look like video games. Or was this again the fault of George "The kids love Jar-Jar" Lucas? Yes, I detect the shadow of Lucas over all this. At some point I know it was said "... sure, they'll never tell the difference between Harrison and the CGI Indy."

Ridley Scott is like one of the last blockbuster directors not to sell out for CGI. He still seems to remember how to do epic without relying on gratuitous SFX and goofy CGI stunt work and phony-looking characters.

Lol...

But seriously, you are correct. I don't understand why they sell out to cheap CGI. Its just a cheap "wow" factor. Its not something that makes an epic.

The monkeys did it for me. That scene was so ridiculous.
#2.5 wakers01 on 22 May 2009 - 19:47
Yes, thank you. I don't mind CGI if it's done well, but too often it's atrocious (i.e. the "vampires" in I Am Legend or more recently X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Many times it's better to use live actors with some CGI overlaying, or miniatures instead of green screen. If you do CGI, do it right. Coincidently, Spielberg had phenominal CGI done in Jurassic Park, which is over a decade old. Go figure!

he prolly means 3d virtual worlds, not conventional VR.
#3.1 GreyWolfSC on 21 May 2009 - 13:43
Those have come and gone, too. Unless he has an idea to make them more interesting...

If Spielberg makes some predictions about the movie industry, I'll listen.

Otherwise, it's pointless as getting birth control advice from Octomom.

Nadya (Octomom) had in-vitro fertilization for each child.

he forgets that it will still be a "Home console" that will provide his 3d experience even if its built-in on the TV Set or Wall or whatever he wants to call

We still very far from "Caprica" virtual reality , and the old 3d VR already went the dodo bird way a long long time ago

I didn't see Spielberg say the home console would disappear, just the submitter.

Must be on crack, that's like saying Mac OS will be the next big gaming platform.
Not everyone can afford a killer rig ever two years, the console takes the guess work out of playing the latest games.
I give him props for thinking PC games rule though.

Spielberg is just a "was good but now he is crap", their last decent movie was 11 years ago.

Director: Munich. Catch Me if You Can. The Terminal. War of the Worlds.
Producer: Too many to list.

Whatever your own opinion on the individual films, he makes films that a lot of people enjoy.

he is good for movies, but he doesn't understand gaming. The same way movies based of games disappoint us, 16 hours of gaming don't translate into a condensed 2 hour movie, the same way a Jurassic Park game would lose all the action if it was expanded into 20 hours "Level 2: Run from the tyrannosaurus rex for 1 hour" instead of the 2 minute chase scene in the movie

isn't predicting the end of consoles in the future kinda a given? I mean, someday there will be 3d and/or virtual games. Kind of a big Duh to me. Hell I could have predicted that and I'm just the average Joe

Exactly. It's like predicting that cars will become more efficient or computers will get faster then calling yourself a sage.

The Dodo became extince because I think the dutch ate them, and rats were eating the eggs. Now, who will eat the actual home consoles?

lol.. i'm from Mauritius.. an island in the indian ocean where dodo used to live. Yeah it's believed it was the dutch as well as the rats which were reponsible..!

I think he is saying that because his midas touch isn't working on gaming, but was he expecting success without even trying? The Boom Blox was interesting, but it was aimed at children that like destroying things, and got boring after playing for an hour without offering any challenge if you have any brains. And his other games got axed, I mean, in standby mode.

Hollywood is getting into gaming but forget that a movie is pretty easy to make since you expect people to sit down and watch what you decide to do, but a game people will decide what they wanna do, and it better have no bugs and excell in every way, and carry a big marketing budget or it won't sell.

If he was thinking that just adding his name at the top was going to make the game sell millions he obviously doesn't know gaming.
#12 LiquidSolstice on 21 May 2009 - 06:05
Uh huh.

Just because his licensed games suck as usual, he makes a semi-prophetic statement and all his fanboys and devotees worship his opinion like mindless drones?

No thx.

I'll never give up a console gaming to go to PC gaming.
#13.1 Joshie on 21 May 2009 - 06:54
That's kind of a weird thing to say. With quality game controllers, a PC version often outperforms its console equivalent--especially in terms of graphics. With laptops getting HDMI-out, it wouldn't surprise me to see game-friendly units marketed for their ability to hook up to any TV in the house for an instant console/media center experience--

--with MUCH better compatibility with your home network.

Oh, also, if the market changes, it's not really going to be your decision. Unless you're going to quit gaming entirely in protest.
#14 Eddo89 on 21 May 2009 - 06:50
Gaming is going to be hard to disappear completely. Yes, eventually we may have a 3D game, but to probably most people, playing a video game while sitting down is their alternative to watching TV sitting down. In other words, they don't want to be moving and just want to sit and relax.

I got Singstar, just for parties. Wii, same thing. But I'm not really going to play either of those by myself, and I don't think I will play a 3D virtual game either, only as a group.
#15 Joshie on 21 May 2009 - 06:59
Ah yes, special extra-expense displays especially designed for 3D. Those will totally penetrate the home market. Yep. Uh huh.

HDTV itself is still slow to find its way into homes. The numbers are growing, yes, and significantly, yes, but it's been on the market for quite a few years now and has a whole lot more going for it (blu-ray, gaming, HD cable, computer display...) than a 3D display would. I mean, unless it got the backing of a company like Apple that would make it more of a religious movement.

imho, onlive doesnt really count as pc gaming... sure the gamepad you are holding and the monitor you are looking at are both connected to a computer, but the game itself isnt on the computer...
#19 Webworldx on 21 May 2009 - 16:55
Wow. A quote from Spielberg on 3D gaming. After he patented a technology for new 3D filming. Anyone wondering intentions?
#20 Nose Nuggets on 21 May 2009 - 17:41
i always look to Hollywood film directors for my video game industry forecasts. always. because not only does he have an opinion i care about, he is extremely knowledgeable and an excellent trends forecaster. keep up the good work, Steve.

3D is a major fad, it won't last. I work in the movie industry and can tell you hands down most people do not care for it. The whole 3D concept is great, except basically everything being made is gimmick-ed. A 3D film needs to have 3D elements that keep the people interested as in the story, not having something flying out of the screen towards them just because they can. If they fix that then 3D has a market for a while, but overall it is a doomed media.

Head tracking combined with proper polarised stereo 3D is going to rule in the future, mark my words:

#22 ACESandElGHTS on 21 May 2009 - 20:58
Yes I foresee a day where we'll be playing directly on our TV sets too, Steven, and that day is today. You see, Microsoft and Sony and this obscure company called Nintendo make these magical, wondrous boxes that project "video games," if you will, on your television screen. You see, it all started just yesterday when Atari had this fantastic new ide.... wait, holy smokes, that was like 1976!!!!

Where've you been, Steven, (aside from making millions of dollars in a completely separate industry)?!

First Dave Perry declares the death of single player gaming, and now Steven Spielberg declares the death of the console.

Newsflash: The console already died once. And it was killed by these two cartridges -- you may have heard of them -- Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T.
#23 ACESandElGHTS on 21 May 2009 - 21:02
Oh, btw, press conferences aside, OnLive is pure vaporware, plus 10 Failboats filled with LAG. Good luck with that.

How the hell would he know. He doesn't even know how to direct decent films/Movies let alone be able to predict something like this.

A couple of years ago, this wouldv';e been true, but, now...well, they'll always compete and be on level grounding.

PC will always dominate for graphic whores like myself and consoles will always win for people who don't want to **** about or have no interest in hardware.
