As reported by Nintendojo, a "retailer conference call" has confirmed a Wii price cut for September 27.

"Nintendojo can now confirm that such a cut is indeed coming," said the site. "Wii will be reduced to $199, effective Sunday, September 27th, and will likely include retailers nationwide."

Both Sony and Microsoft recently lowered the cost of their current hardware bringing the new PlayStation 3 Slim to $299.99 and the Xbox 360 too as follows:

• Xbox 360 Elite - $299.99 (was $399.99)
• Xbox 360 Pro - $249.99 while supplies last (was $299.99)
• Xbox 360 Arcade - $199.99 (same as old price)

I'm kinda surprised to see Nintendo responding to the changing competitive environment so rapidly, but I guess with the PS3 Slim nearly tripling or doubling the Wii's sells on a worldwide basis since launch got them to finally cave in. Now Wii will be the same price as a 360 Arcade.

The PS3 Slim gave the PS3 a lot of momentum ... the 360 got some momentum from the price drop but nothing like a new design to give a console a shot in the arm to boost start sales. I wonder when will they ever start releasing the color Wii consoles? I remember seeing pictures of them years ago but nothing on the market yet.

That was really a surprise....They explained they would not cut their prices as sales kept going up.

They can cut them because AFAIK Nintendo still makes a profit on their consoles.

You'd wait for sales to level off or start declining before cutting the price, and I imagine they're keeping the coloured wii's up their sleeves for the next time sales start to stagnate.

With all due respect to Nintendo, I won't even flirt with the notion of buying one until it's $99. I really want to play the classic Mario games from my youth but don't want to gamble on a NES off of Ebay. Sadly, it'll likely be dropped by Nintendo before it gets to be $99. Come on Nintendo, allow us old fogeys (33) to play classic NES games for cheap.

If you're desperate to play old games, you can afford to pay for the console.

I'd like to know too. Because everywhere I look, the RRP is still listed at £180.

Well it is common knowledge that nintendo raised the price for the UK, but not all retailers passed it onto the customers. GAME was one of the companies that did raise it for customers to £199.99. This is due to Nintendos price increase... Also, I work in game and sell them on a regular basis. ALSO, here: http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2009/03/w...rease_to_hit_uk

Except that was back in March. What's to say the price isn't being decreased in the UK too this time?

It might have been back in march, but the price went up for customers in some places in August.

I figured this would be coming even though they had recently denied it. Nintendo usually hasn't been the first to lower their console price, waiting for others to move first. Its a better price for sure. I don't really use mine anymore as there have been very few games that interest me and ones like Madden that I would be interested in they turned into a cartoon. I had really hoped Nintendo would work on graphics even though they aren't HD, but still overall the graphics don't excite me. I know graphics aren't everything in a game, but the games just seem stale to me.

Still tooo expensive the games suck the extra controllers that you add on to the main controller look like something you get from a recycling bin..cheap and flimsly......

I'm glad they dropped the price. Now I'm going to sell my old one for $260 and buy a new one.
