Nintendo DSi LL revealed

As previously rumored, Nintendo have issued a press release today confirming the upcoming release of a new Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DSi LL has two screens both measuring at 4.2 inches, but the resolution is exactly the same as the current DSi, meaning it's more likely to be marketed towards the elderly or those with poor eyesight.

Due to the larger screens, the device itself weighs 100g more, but it also benefits from a larger stylus and a longer battery life. Right now, it seems Nintendo are only releasing the DSi LL in Japan, where it will go on sale for 20,000 yen (about $220). For comparison's sake, the DSi, released only a few months ago, cost around 18,900 yen at launch.

With Nintendo marketing itself towards a wider audience for a while now, the move is logical, and it solves an issue likely to be holding off a lot of potential buyers. The question here is whether or not Nintendo will be able to drum up interest in what is essentially a five-year-old gadget. Sales figures for the DSi show certain groups are still interested, but a larger-screen DS seems like a move that should have been made a long time ago.

Excellent, still doesn't support the original Gameboy or Advance games, nor does it support the Guitar Hero grip, so at the moment, the Lite is still the handheld for me!

Any indication of a resolution increase with this? Larger screens with the same resolution means larger pixels. Good for the visually impaired, bad for everyone else.

If you increase the resolution you'd break the compatibility with existing titles.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily "bad" for everyone else. You still get the same resolution, but on a larger scale.

If you look at it from the other direction: smaller dot pitch but same resolution isn't "better". It's just smaller.

If this is released in Japan won't it be bigger than most of their houses?

Nintendo are a joke, they brought the DS out and figured that it was too big so they brought the DS Lite out now the DS Lite is too small so they are going back to a bigger console?

I hate greedy companies who slightly remix old hardware and put it in a new shell and sell it as the latest and greatest.

It's a good selling portable system with a specific market, I see absolutly nothing wrong with releasing different sizes of it... they did the same thing with Game Boy

They're not selling it as the "latest and greatest", they're selling it as an alternative to the existing model. The same applied to the Lite, it wasn't an improvement per-say, but it was an alternative available to those that wanted a smaller DS.

Or, what actually happened to the screens was:
DS --> DS Lite: same size screen, but better quality
DS Lite --> DSi: bigger screen, better quality
DSi --> DSi LL: bigger screen

Yes, really milking it by improving the DS with each revision. How dare they.

You are essentially complaining that Nintendo are taking advantage of advances in technology. You aren't forced to buy the updates.

And as Majesticmerc says: it doesn't appear to be a replacement anyway.

It's not just the screen that changes. Doesn't the DSi have better Wi-Fi encription capabilities, for example?

Yup, loads of other stuff improved as well.

(And I don't even have any DS)

I they'd brought back the GBA slot that would have sealed the deal for me but without it I'm not so sure.

Is that the power button on the side or is that it there on the left, if its been moved there its in a really stupid place.

What's wrong with it being there?

Its stupid, much more chance of it being hit by mistake, much better having it on the side out of the way,

I guess I'm not sure why you would hit a depressed button on the middle left of the player? Your hand should be off the left of the player, with only your thumb over the d-pad?

who cares, this is for the Japanese market - clearly Nintendo knows their own demographic best.
I really hope they're working on a next gen product with the design cues of Apple *imagines dual edge-to-edge glass touch screens in an aluminum enclosure*
#7.1 dogmai on 29 Oct 2009 - 12:25
Glass screen for the kids??? Broken in less than a day. I've seen kids just toss them over to their beds or table or couch and just onto the floors. They need to keep their current durability but upgrade everything else. That's the only good thing about it is that it's durable.
#7.2 AgentGray on 29 Oct 2009 - 14:53
"for kids" nothing. My DSi is battered around more than my nephews between trips to work, tossing it to coworkers, and the like... if the device becomes too fragile, you don't treat it like a game, you treat it like an appliance like I do my iPhone...where's the fun in that?
#7.3 ixne_hombre on 30 Oct 2009 - 02:40
Totally agree that Nintendo knows their demigraphics - in Japan, DS isnt just for kids - there tons of games and apps that target middle-aged adults, and there is a growing number of elderly folks who are buying DS. This will compliment their "old folks" cell phones with the huge buttons...

Oooo... I skipped the DS, but got the DS Lite.
I skipped the DSi, but I may get this. Bigger screens and better battery life?

I don't have any GBA games. I do have devices like the M3 loaded with homebrew, but Slot 1 devices have since taken the place of GBA slot devices. I also don't have any Guitar Hero games. The lack of GBA slot on this or the DSi is not a big deal to me.

The shortened battery life and ugliness of the DSi made me turn away. If this does have better battery life and looks better than the DSi, then I may pick one up.

This is interesting. I'm still curious though to see what is going to come after the DS... I wonder when they'll make that step...
#9.1 matt_hobbs05 on 30 Oct 2009 - 04:11
It might not be for a while yet. Nintendo were making a bit of a gamble when they released the original DS alongside the Game Boy line. Since the DS line is going so well, I don't think they'll be too keen to make any bold moves in the handheld market for quite some time
#10 pyehac on 31 Oct 2009 - 02:54
Atleast they didn't drop the DS slot unlike another portable game maker.

Too bad I just bought a DS lite though.
