The company that provides Internet service for the state's largest online charter school is pulling the plug because the school is two months behind in its payments.
The Einstein Academy Charter School, a "cyber school" that offers instruction over the Internet to students in their homes, owes Digital Freedom of Scranton $80,000 for the last two months of service, Digital Freedom President Brad Stevens said. The company would likely have to disconnect the service by the end of the day Friday, he said.
Einstein officials said they are trying to get the money from the state. The school, which enrolls 2,200 children in grades K-12, is one of seven cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania.
Under a contract with the school, Digital Freedom has provided service to most Einstein families at no cost, with other families using their local Internet service providers to log on to the school's Web site. Those with their own providers are not affected by the billing dispute.
