My tester friend MSMANIAC has just told me that Windows .NET Server Build 3716 is now available for download. His MS buddies sent him and a few 100 other select testers notice of this in between build. This is likely the last "interim" before RC2 and the long awaited Server Release of Windows 2002 (now called Windows 2003). Here are some notes from the email:
We are pleased to offer this build for download from http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com. This is an interim build between RC1 and RC2 and is not considered "Beta quality". This build is intended as a preview of our progress towards RC2 and to allow you to regress bugs fixed since RC1. We do not require that you install this build. If you choose to install this build it is recommended that you back up all data and configuration information prior to installation.

    Testing Focus
Please focus your testing on true “server” scenarios. The goals of the technical beta group will be to test server functionality, reliability, and server application compatibility, and to provide a development environment. We are not interested in bug reports on client or end-user scenarios running Windows .Net Server as a desktop or client operating system and reserve the right to immediately close any such bug reports. The server technical beta group is focused on server-specific testing. For example:
  • Graphics Acceleration is disabled by default, which disables DirectX functionality. This is to enhance server stability and is not needed in standard server scenarios. Re-enabling such functionality is not a valid server testing scenario.
  • Theme service is disabled by default. Re-enabling theme service is not a standard server configuration.
  • USB network drivers and other older network card drivers are not supported in the server product family. Bug reports should not be submitted on drivers that are no longer supported in-the-build.
any links?
Yes, http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com for testers, and for the rest of us there won't be any links on this site as per Neowin policy. Sorry guys, but you know the score.

It was never Windows 2002, it's alwayz been 2003, and it's not for networking, it's got a lot of new features. On top of that, it's not to replace 2000 server, it's a whole new OS, the first true 64 bit OS in fact. I don't see a link for this new release though, and I am a beta tester. I'm currently running .net Enterprise Server RC1

You are correct, but with XP released in Oct 2001 it was planned for the Server version to release shortly afterwards, there was no name announced at that time, it was still called Whistler Server, many people (including Neowin) speculated on Windows 2002 Server. Paul Thurrott even had an image of that name for a while. So even if it wasn't "official" we knew it at one point as Windows 2002 Server (I'm pretty sure that word cropped up some at MS too at the time) PS: Welcome to Neowin

First of all, I am in the CPP Program - this OS is basically a replacement for Windows 2000 Server with a hell-load of new features; its called Windows .NET Server 2003, Edition. IE if it were Enterprise Server its called Windows .NET Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Its sort of a combination of Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP..
Its sort of a combination of Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP.
A better way to put that is that Windows .NET Server 2003 Enterprise Edition is a combination of Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows Whistler. Microsoft killed Windows XP Professional with that Luna GUI and all that add on home user crap. Windows .NET does not have any of this, which will make it a way better OS. hopefully

It has all of what Windows XP has and more (latest versions of all its "client software") the difference is, it's all disabled at default. One can also do this with Windows XP Home or Pro. It has Themes, Visual Styles, Media Player, Messaging Software, Audio, DirectX -all that bloatware everyone talks of. Its just "off"
