Intel Corp. Monday introduced a new Xeon processor for dual processor servers and workstations . The MPUs feature 1Mbyte L3 cache, double the on-die cache of previous Xeon chips. The new processor has 3.06MHz frequency and a 533MHz front side bus. It is drop-in compatible with existing servers using the Intel E7501 server chipset or E7505 workstation chipset. The larger on-die cache improves performance by more than 15% over previous dual processor Xeon chips, according to Intel. The new processor is available at a suggested list price of $690 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Pasadena, Calif.-based Overture licenses its results to a wide range of Web sites - including Yahoo - that take a cut of the fees generated whenever someone clicks on an advertiser's link displayed under in a section typically labeled as "sponsored results."

Trading in Yahoo and Overture shares was halted at the start of trading Monday morning on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The deal calls for each Overture share to be converted into 0.6108 shares of Yahoo stock and $4.75 in cash. Overture would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Yahoo, and its chief, Ted Meisel, would report to Dan Rosensweig, Yahoo's chief operating officer.

The deal requires regulatory and shareholder approval but could be completed by the fourth quarter, the companies said.

$690 and 533FSB? And this is how Intel is trying to keep up with AMD's Opteron?

They *are* affordable. As long as you buy in quantities. You see, if we can get 1,000 Neowin'ers to get a batch order we can all take advantage of the discount. Who'd like to act as the wholesaler? Takers?

We might as well get 1000 Opterons

L3 cache is off chip, and won't run as fast as the Level2 or 1 caches. L3 cache is the same speed as the main memory.
