Advanced Micro Devices confirmed the upcoming Opteron 2.0GHz processor release by publishing the Composite Theoretical Performance (CTP) calculations for AMD Opteron microprocessors, including x40, x42, x44 and x46 chips with 1.40, 1.60, 1.80 and 2.0GHz core-clocks respectively.

The CTP calculations are stated in Millions of Theoretical Operations Per Second (MTOPS) and are based upon a formula in the United States Department of Commerce Export Administration Regulations 15 CFR 774 (Advisory Note 4 for Category 4).
    Single processor configurations:

  • AMD Opteron Model 140 – 5017MTOPS
  • AMD Opteron Model 142 – 5734MTOPS
  • AMD Opteron Model 144 – 6451MTOPS
  • AMD Opteron Model 146 – 7168MTOPS

DesktopX is a revolutionary program that allows users to extend their Windows desktop to support true objects.

These objects can be combined together to form themes or used on their own. In short, a user can literally build their own desktop interface and they can do so without being a programmer.

In addition, a user can choose to just use individual DesktopX objects to enhance their existing desktop. DesktopX objects can be anything from a simple picture to an MP3 player, stock tickers, weather monitoring, instant messaging, or anything else that one could imagine having on their desktop.

Users can either create their own objects or download any of the thousands of themes and objects already available and use them.

Corresponding Intel figures are here:

Seems like Intel has a comfortable lead.

How so? Intel's 64 bit ranges from 5622 to 7500. Yes, a lead, but very slight... for a much MORE expensive chip. And the Opteron will handle current 32 bit software better.

So if you did a MTOPS/$ and considered the other features, AMD has the lead. Maybe a comfortable one.

You are probably right.
However, notice that the rating on the Intel's site are for older chips.
Intel now ships 3.2 GHz Pentium 4s & 1.5 GHz Itanium 2s
- neither of which are listed in Intel's CTP list.
This made me believe that the MTOPS rating for the newer Intel chips must be even better.

Here is a page with Apple's CTP info.

Power Mac G5 (Dual Processor) @ 2 GHz
45,000

According to the link CTP isn't a benchmark but still makes you think.
