The board of directors for AT&T Wireless Services Inc. is exploring the sale of the company, AT&T Wireless officials confirmed Thursday.

Chief Executive Officer John Zeglis told financial analysts during an earnings report that there's been "much interest" in the company, although company officials declined to name suitors or set a timeline for the sale of the company.

The company also issued a four-paragraph press release saying it has decided to "explore strategic alternatives" due to "significant interest" from a number of companies.

"The board will consider the company's options and determine the course of action this is in the best interest of its shareholders," the press release said. The company has hired Merrill Lynch & Co. and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a New York law firm, to evaluate offers, according to the press release.

According to media reports, Cingular Wireless LLC, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Vodafone Group PLC, T-Mobile USA Inc. and Nextel Communications Inc. are all interested in buying AT&T Wireless.

Because of a fairly strong financial position, AT&T Wireless will be in the driver's seat in sales negotiations, said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecom analyst, in an email. "I am sure their shareholders are loving it, because they don't have to do a deal unless it benefits them," Kagan wrote. "What a great position to be in."

AT&T Wireless postponed an analyst meeting next week in order to focus on sale negotiations, Kagan said. "They are the belle of the ball right now," he added. "Now they can take the time they need to evaluate, without distraction, all the various companies and approaches. AT&T Wireless is in no rush to make a decision. There is no pressure on them. In fact, one option is not to merge at all."

Company spokesman Peter Rowe said he couldn't comment further, but he emphasized the highlights of AT&T Wireless' earnings report Thursday. The company's fourth-quarter loss was US$84 million or $0.03 per share, compared to a loss of $131 million or $0.05 per share a year earlier. AT&T Wireless' fourth quarter services revenue was $3.9 billion, up 4.4 percent from the last quarter of 2002.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had forecast a break-even fourth quarter for the company.

AT&T Wireless experienced a couple of problems in the fourth quarter related to customer care software glitches and number portability, Kagan wrote, but he called those problems "isolated incidents."

"The bright side is the worst should be over and the company remains one of the strongest and well positioned, which is why they are the focus of so much merger attention," Kagan added.

Please no. I like my service. I don't want to have the risk of things changing.

Kinda ironic that "Ma Bell" is struggling while the baby bells (what's left of them...SBC, etc) seem to be thriving.

Same here. I certainly hope Cingular doesn't buy them. I *left* Cingular to go to AT&T Wireless.

Most likely will be Cingular because their phones and networks are interoperable.
That is good for Cingular, because it ultimately costs them less.
That is good for ATT Wireless subscribers since cingular has a larger coverage, they'll get a better coverage! I'm looking forward to it.

Hmmm... interesting... AT&T Wireless has been moving to a GSM network. The only other national carriers using GSM in the US are Cingular and T-Mobile.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if a non-GSM carrier bought them.

By the way, AT&T Wireless' GSM network in Phoenix SUCKS!!! I signed up with them, but invoked my 30-day cancellation rights because I couldn't get service anywhere. I hope their service is better in other cities.

Their service is among the best in Mississippi, especially in the areas around the larger cities like Jackson and Gulfport/Biloxi.

I dunno where you are going, but I have had AT&T in the phoenix area for off and on 5 years. I have never had a problem and I Live at 115th Ave and Indian School. I also go way out east and still with no problems.

I have tried a lot of the other carriers (Sprint, Verizon, Nextel) in phoenix, and I keep going back to AT&T. (Sprint was the WORST carrier I have ever had).

You must have gotten a bad phone, or started service when they FIRST released their GSM service, but even then, the service was still good.

/Edit: What phone did you have?

I live in the Arcadia area (center of town). No service at my home, and no service at my office in Tempe.

I ended up going with T-mobile, and have been quite happy with them. While no company is perfect, I have had very few problems with them. Sprint on the other hand has horrible coverage in this area!!!

Just to clear a few things up. Cingular may use GSM but they are not full GSM. T-Mobile is the Nations only 100% Digital GSM Network. At&T and Cingular use GSM and use a Sim card on some phones, but still use the older Analog system as well. Just some info for you.

Why does this have the Wi-Fi graphic? It's cell phone related.

Teriffic..........after 2 years of AT&T's great service, no drop calls, everything working perfectly,
great voice quality (at least in my area), they are going to probably sell out, and then everything
will be screwed up for a year after the sale.

Thanks a lot AT&T wireless

I don't know, whenever I lose my AT&T signal there is a solid Cingular network available. Maybe this could be a good thing. Plus, think of all the influence this will have with the phone manufacturers to offer more phones to AT&T if they combined with another large company.

cingular has been in talks for purchasing at&t for a while now. i first heard this crop up last year before cingular even had theird gsm network ready. personally, at least in chicago and the surrounding area cingular seems to be better. though i wouldn't worry about the quality of service changing for the worst. just because they get bought out doesn't mean that they tear down equipment. your service should stay relatively unchanged.

My dad told me a few days ago Cingular was in the process of buying AT&T.. I asked him if Cingular had the money (I thought they were poor), but he told me that they were privately owned or something and they did in fact have money to buy AT&T Wireless. I've also heard the stock jumped (for AT&T) when this was announced.

AT&T and T-Mobile phones also seem to be cross compat, at least my T-Mobile Phone will connect to the AT&T network... (Nokia 3390)

Wouldn't mind seeing T-Mobile grab them up, I really like them...
