Microsoft today alerted sucessful testers that they have been accepted to take part in the next generation WinXP Media Center Edition Beta Program. Nominations were held a couple of months ago but it wasn't clear what testers were signing up for.

In an email to testers, the Windows XP Media Center Edition Beta Team make it clear this beta is the Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2004 Update Beta program. Whether or not testers will receive Media Center Extender devices or portable media players remains to be seen. Testers have been asked to fill out a hardware loan agreement which Microsoft requires by the 24th March.

We expect the beta to begin within the month. Stay tuned.

And no you don't get to keep the hardware or buy the hardware.

I was on the last beta and the ammount of leechers that wanted the hadware for free or cheap was embarassing.

So get over it, its not going to happen.

Maybe I should get the hardware on loan, put linux on it, and send it back to them....

depends who you are.. I run my own business and I got to keep all hardware.. and i've been invited back to test this time around as well..

I hope they fix the memory issues. MCE is just way too processor/memory intensive.
Quote this comment #2.1 Posted by neufuse on 18 Mar 2004 - 13:45
the memory thing is because its based on .NET, which allocates memory diffrently then a standard MFC/WIN32 application which only allocates exactly what it needs.
Quote this comment #2.2 Posted by briangw on 18 Mar 2004 - 13:52
so, is this going to be fixed when all MS stuff goes .net?
Quote this comment #2.3 Posted by Tom Servo on 18 Mar 2004 - 13:59
No it will not be "fixed", because there's nothing to fix! The .NET CLR will not unallocate application-freed memory unless:
- The systems starts running out of memory globally
- The application will be minimized, which is interpreted by the CLR as going inactive
- The preallocated memory hasn't been reused by the application past multiple Gen2 collections

Well, there's obviously an issue, since many people are reporting problems on thegreenbutton.com. ehshell is a memory hog, despite how much memory someone has. I've got a gig of memory with a 2GHz processor on an NForce 2 ASUS board, Avermedia m150 card and a GEForce 4800 ti Se card, and notice lockups and high CPU usage all of the time, even if I just have one program running in the background. The only thing I have yet to try is utilizing NVDVD as my encode vs. WINDVD trial which I'm running now. NVDVD disk is in the mail.

Where accepted testers all from a specific region/country or are they from all around the globe?
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by creamhackered on 18 Mar 2004 - 14:41
Microsoft were targetting a lot of UK testers this time around for compatability with Sky and freeview etc.

I have two wifi laptops, a desktop, a wifi handheld, all communicating together on a wifi home LAN. I didn't get my invite either. Maybe we will be in the next "wave". Sometime MS does its invites in groups. I am not holding my breath though.

Same here...
That is why I asked if testers were from a specific region or country... But hope is the last to die...

Does anybody know if US inhabitants were the only ones notified?

I'm in Europe and got an invitation to nominate myself for this beta. But if it works out like last time I'm afraid I'll be left out again. And I'm wondering why. Is there some kind of "proper" information you need to enter into the form when you want to get accepted for the MCE beta?
I've got audio and video files, plenty of them. Several networked computers, wireless, digital TV via cable, etc. I'm an experienced tester, too. I was one of the elite testers who received a complimentary Office 2003 copy for our testing efforts. I won't mention XP Embedded, VS.Net, Windows Server, Windows XP, etc. Man, I would be an asset to the beta, I know it! Who do I need to bribe?
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by ThunderRiver on 18 Mar 2004 - 23:57
Gee.. are you bragging now or you are truly an assets to MS just cuz you received a copy of Office 2003 Professional? I got my Office 2003 too, and all the beta tests you mentioned, I am/was also in there. You say Whidbey and Yukon, I am in those too. But no I didn't get into this MCE beta program, and I am not complaining.. so why should you? You might as well bribe yourself to keep your mouth shut. Beta testing is voluntary and there is never a guarantee that you will get included, so stop whining like a little baby.

I only got the invite email last week here in Australia, it said the survey would need to be completed by the 17th March, with successful testers notified in 4 - 8 weeks. Is this the same beta?
