Does it *look* any different than the previous Windows Update?
What new features does it have? Any ideas?

I have BITS set to "Manual" and Automatic Updates set to "Automatic" and everything is working fine. However, I seem to remember having to start the BITS service manually before I could get everything to work right the first time.

Ok most products of MS are BETA, if its bin released.
It does'nt support any Longhorn version right ?

Why on Earth would windows update version 5 support an OS that is in an alpha/beta stage?
Quote this comment #6.2 Posted by Frank84 on 21 May 2004 - 14:08
maybe for testing drivers or other stuff ?
if it goes wrong in beta, why would it go the right way in public version ?

I am on SP2, v.2096 and followed the method of install. When I try to run a scan I get this error:

Error number: 0x800A01AE

Anyone have any ideas? I think it might be due to not having the latest releases of the software that support Win Update 5 (i.e. BITS, etc) but some of the components I cannot remember the names of.

Help!

I installed that BITS thing, and the dialog said "*** out of 0.10Mb" while the page info said out of 1.9Mb. heh

Can someone enlighten me why the **** Windowsupdate needs a browser? The guy who came up with that idea should have been fired instantly. It would be much better if it would have been a Windows program.

It is all a marketing thing. If you haven't realized, Windows Update does not work with any browser other than IE, therefore, MS keeps Windows Update in a browser to gain an edge over Netscape, Opera.... When Windows Update first came out, Netscape's edge over IE was a big 'issue' for MS and therefore Windows Update was made to keep IE on every computer. If someone wants updates, that someone needs Internet Explorer.
Quote this comment #13.2 Posted by STV on 21 May 2004 - 18:51
and exactly why is that a bad thing? IE is a program that allows you to use windows update, so windows update could be seen as an app even though you use it through the browser. also, that automatic updates program is a windows program that does get the important patches for you.

Doesn't work with any browser engine other than IE. I use NetCaptor, and Windows update works fine.

to those of you who would like to remove this I would recommend using XPlite.. uninstall windows update and reinstall it there.. worked for me, back to the old 4!

I bloody hate these things... I put in the link and it takes me to a blank page. !@#$%^&*()

In fact, the WindowsUpdate site doesn't work at all for me. I'm using IE, ActiveX isn't disabled or anything...
