Neowin caught by a storm in GMail tea cup?

Well its seems that GMail already has a loyal elegance of fan boys & malicious members. A new rival has appeared called You’ve Got Post boasting unlimited space and was quickly posted in Neowin’s Back Page News forum.

As everyone can imagine, the “unlimited” tag is the important fact here. It seems GMail users didn’t like what they heard, or maybe they did? Because they started signing up in droves and sending each other massive files and pictures using this new service. This was spurred on by members of another forum that were openly asking people to send them huge files to fill the space up even more. This was so effective that the majority of sign-ups were from that single forum.

You may say “who cares?” and with a service that sees your message to cherry pick ads for you many wouldn’t. But with You’ve Got Post its different, in an attempt to beat its better known GMail rival, went down a different path. They decided instead of reading all your emails and sending you ads as a result they ask for occasional donations for the service insted.

This sort of thing is not uncommon among Internet and computer users. Microsoft vs Apple, Intel vs AMD. It seems us geeks just can’t help ourselves.

We must remember that both offer “free” services and unbelievable amounts of storage. So what’s at the centre of this storm and why would users of a email service turn to this action? I would hazard a guess “commercialisation”. GMail members are selling & trading invites to what is a free service.

This spawned a new craze, were everyone wants the best email address they can buy, usually their first name, popular companies and even pop stars names. True hysteria built on hype has caused email accounts to become valuable and any rival offering a better service and this is a threat to them.

So when your saving for your pension don’t forget to add a few choice GMail accounts to go along with those 1000’s of catchy domain names your sitting on too…

Update: well it seems that the GMail group won, You’ve Got Post accounts now have a 20mb limit, returning them to the hords of companies offering a similer service. GMail it seams, has kept its crown for now...

although it made neowin out to look like we organized a mass mailing attack on them to bring them down or something

Sigh, I should never have asked "Amy" if she wanted me to post about it to begin with.

ahaha loc is on teh front page!!!!

whats the drama anyways? dont remember gmail going"ohnos!!! dont send big files!1!1!!" and they are still in beta status. if ygp isnt designed for sending or receiving big files then guess what amy, change it so that you cant!

as long as the user was obeying the ygp guidelines then i dont see it as their fault, more your fault for being unable to cope with an influx of new members.
#2.1 Voodoo on 14 Jun 2004 - 19:48
i think the point it that this insn't just about file sizes, its about the attempt to cripple a company by flooding, usually we call them script kiddies with DDoS, now casual fans are doing the same thing...
#2.2 spidoinkel on 14 Jun 2004 - 19:51
the point is you dont see **** like this happening on hotmail and it still wouldnt happen even if they offered 1tb because of the fact that they have the correct file limitations to stop users from sending or receiving files that big in the first place.

i agree that the actions of some users was pretty malicious but the website should of been prepared for the backlash it would receive for effectively going up against one of the most powerful groups on the net.

malicious hackers = ******s, unprepared web based email owners = idiots.
#2.3 vetLOC on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:06
I still feel used after all this crap.

I mean you stumble across a great free service, your in contact with a seemingly nice webmaster who helps run it, you do them a favor by posting about it in a MUCH larger forum (no pun intended) and they get tons of people sign up. Then just yank it back and pretty much screw me & others.

Like I said in the original thread, I would never condone attacking or flooding their servers. But I'm glad someone posted this as news, now YGP has something else. Bad press.

Slashdot this story Voodoo!

Everyone flipped last week because YGP was offering 1TB of space. logged on this morning, and they've kicked it back to 20Mb.
I don't understand why someone would want to pay money for a retarded email address like BritneySpears@ypg.com, pretty retarded to me...

Fan boy...

That must be among the most widely used words on NeoWin.

QUOTE
They decided instead of reading all your emails

All mail services "read your mail" as the mail servers receive them. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to present them to you. The only difference in GMail's case is that these "read mail" are used to adapt the advertisements shown as well as show you the mails.

I can't say I'd care the slightest if GMail "read" love letters to my girlfriend, that my father had divorced, or whatever. It's just a computer algorithm adapting the ads... Happens all the time in Google Web Search too, or how did *you* think Google AdSense worked? Still everyone and their grandmother use Google to search for everything between prostate cancer information and how to make apple pies. Even if Google reads your search terms (yes, every one of them) and can theoretically connect it to your IP to build user profiles over a several year long period! Wow...? *yawn*

exactly

Not @ Jugalator: how to you think spam filters work? same way as google wants to do with gmail for ads. same exact concept but people don't get all stupid over that. They just want something to bitch about.

Also, a key difference is that they PUT IN ADVERTISING. Alternatives ofter same size, friendly communities, extra features AND no ads.

Personally I can't see a problem with it. Coming next week:

they probably delete all the emails of people that are members of neowin

Moronic fanboys. Simple as that. A service comes along and offers you something FOR FREE and people get together to bring it down. Just idiotic. If Porsche started giving away free cars, would you work your ass off to burn their dealerships down?
#9.1 threetonesun on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:35
Well, it was better it happened now than a year down the road when they had to start cancelling accounts because they couldn't handle it.

Face it, offering that much storage space and a reliable account is a big undertaking.

I sure feel sorry for BOOGSoftball™, Radish™ and Blaise...

They have closed a zillion threads so far!

YGP isn't even the picture anymore folks! they aren't offering a TB of storage anymore! it's only 20Mb
(5 replies) #12 Cyranthus on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:30
i still dont see why any of you people would need with even 1 gig of mail... but 2 gigs or unlimited? whats the use? your never going to use up that much space with your email in the first place!
#12.1 mistical on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:38
exactly, but it is something new for us all to play with. I have had a gmail account for about a week now, I am actually using it, even though I have already 3 other main email addresses, including 1 more too that I rarely use.

still nice to play with, gmail is actually popular, only reason why I grabbed an account and the name I wanted, plus I said I do use it and still will continue too. The others, I think are just a joke, yougotposts? aventuremail? ...so long and probably not even going to be here so long.
#12.2 akassebaum on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:57
Bill Gates also said you would never ever use more than 64K of storage... How delightfully wrong he was!
#12.3 Cyranthus on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:10
i dont give a **** about what Bill Gates says... what the hell does he have to do with this? im looking at now...

how big is your average email? not even 1 to 10kb... it takes more than a thousand emails just to fill my yahoo mail account... so what are you going to do with 1 gigabyte of storage for emails? All an email is is a little bit of text that doesnt even take up that much space... you'de need more than a million (probably more) emails to fill up a gigabyte of space. when in your damn lifetime are you going to get 1 million emails!? useless!!!!
#12.4 Hova on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:38
Its not about the emails itself, its about the attachments. If I can send 10 mb of pictures, and store them on the email service, I would to have that.

That's the point! You never have to delete anything.

If you have popular website with your email posted or use email for work or have a lot of friends it'll take you less time than you think to fill 1GB.
#13 mistical on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:36
Best news yet so far I have read in awhile. Made me laugh so much I did not take part of any of this, but I was reading a lot of the neowin posts in that particular thread and geeze.. lol. I just really want to know if you would get 1TB (actually amy says you get unlimited) of space.

Plus, would they even be here in 1 year? you'd be screwed to have all your email gone one day and not even know they what happened.
(3 replies) #14 Tartan on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:46
I didnt take part in it either, but sounds like its pretty f*cking stupid to be offering unlimited or 1tb....it's impossibe in real terms and I think members here were just giving them a wake up call to that fact. What morons YGP must be.
#14.1 bangbang023 on 14 Jun 2004 - 20:51
It's a assinine wake up call. Let it be known that Neowin does not condone any of this.
#14.2 Tartan on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:03
I neither approve or disapprove of these actions. I'd like to see a company support 1gb accounts without searching user's emails AND cope with the demand. I also don't belive in the hype that gmail has reached either. I'm betting that when the furor has died down many months from now, that gmail too will knock down their offering. They're just trying to steal users from hotmail and yahoo and when they eventually have a few million users, they'll no doubt have to knock down their storage offering anyway.
#14.3 MK. on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:10
Indeed, Tartan. I believe the so-called "rejects" did everyone a favor. Rather than have YGP impose space restrictions later down the road, or even suspend the service completely, the "moronic fanboys" have forced YGP to open their eyes a little.

These little nobody companies need to stop trying to compete with giants like Google. It's futile and just wastes everyones time.

(3 replies) #17 sentio on 14 Jun 2004 - 21:44
It would've been nice to have alternatives to gmail. After perusing neowins forum boards, I've come to the conclusion that a majority of subscribers advocate freedom of choice: Software, Hardware, and Politics. Its sad to see that a few of these "advocates" have gone against their own ideals, choosing instead to cripple an email service that had great potential.

What can I say?

You're a waste of webspace. Nothing that you approve/disapprove of now has any legitimacy. A bunch of words and phrases from a hypocrites mouth.

Yes, legitimate alternatives to Gmail. Not these fly-by-night email services that keep popping up, offering unrealistic amounts of space. Good riddance to YGP and Aventure Mail.

I'd be careful about somethingawful bashing if I were you... Forum takeovers seem quite common there
#19 LLivingLarge on 14 Jun 2004 - 22:43
You've Got Post is a publicity scam. A couple of days ago, their 1GB mail service became a 20MB mail service. I pray that you didn't use real information when you signed up because YGP is believed to be a warez uploading sting operation. Let this be a lesson to everyone, if it sounds too good to be true, consult others first before deciding for yourself.

Sigh.. not that I'm exactly in on it, but this seems to me like a common, petty abuse of some person's goodwill. Screams of immaturity... and you can't possibly tell me that all those account registrations were done in good purpose.

This GMail thing has gotten absolutely pathetic. People defend it beyond all reason - it's not a particularly good service, it has privacy implications (with politicians worried about the implications of it) and even Google is going down hill; Google has become a haven for dodgy behaviour and the search results have recently started becoming less useful as you have to wade through irrelevant information. Google seem to have let power get to their head and the service is starting to be compromised.

I find it sad that people are so pathetic that they want to bring down a website to make themselves feel big... there is no justification for it. This sort of thing WOULDN'T be tolerated in "real life" and so why should it be tolerated on the web?!?!?!? All this "better we find out now the site is unreliable" is crap; next it will be ok to rob someone to prove that their sercurity system is crap (exageration, but to the point). I am sick to death of GMail and it's diehard fans already - it's all hype. Wow... the early birds get a nice email address. I know it seems great now, but once you get past the age of 14 then you start to realise a short email address probably isn't the most important thing in life. Still, at least you can brag to all your classmates.

GMail has been a plague on the web... the only advantage it has brought is that alternatives now offer the same or more space and a better service; it is just sad that people are trying to bring them down just to make GMail look better.

Better service? I wouldn't call Aventure Mail better, since it was constantly down or at a crawl. And YGP has already reduced their account space down to 20 MB, which probably would have been inevitable even without the recent spamming incident.
#24.2 theyarecomingforyou on 15 Jun 2004 - 00:14
I'd hardly call it my imagination when I use Google and over recent months it has been becoming less useful (though it is still the backbone to the web... I don't dispute that; I use it many times per day and wouldn't know what to do without it). Google's service HAS gone downhill recently. GMail HAS been more trouble than it is worth. Also, I never claimed YGP or AvenutreMail were better... but Spymac IS.
#24.3 Sushubh on 15 Jun 2004 - 01:15
the only problem with google is that it is being plagued by the random blogs of random bloggers... every other search result in a lot of blog links which are rarely useful and often rants or personal opinions. Yeah I am bashing myself here...

the disadvantage of being the best in the business. google is searching the web way too deeply!
#24.4 Waka on 15 Jun 2004 - 09:44
Google is a shadow of its former self. There are plenty of other search engines on the web which give better (more usable) results than Google - try alltheweb.com
It's a shame, Google was by far the best search engine out there...for some reason they've now wrecked it.

I cant belive all the buzz over mail accounts, I mean if you really do want lots of space, no restrictions, ads, you own filters.... whatever why not get your own domain hosted on virtual hosting or even a dedicated server and use it?

I started doing this about 2 years ago and never looked back anymore

#25.1 YaddaMe on 15 Jun 2004 - 00:11
Agreed

Heck, for those only interested in email, they wouldnt even need any hosting at all, as many reg co's bundle email + 1 page site with the domain registration.
#25.2 wulfshayde on 15 Jun 2004 - 07:16
Or better yet, go to www.dyndns.org download their client and run your own mailserver from home. Its free, and you can have as much space as you can afford hard drives. Its that easy. Plus, no third party spam software scans your emails.
