- Nice,
The Mac's MSN look better than Win's one...
Will be nice with the MiniMac ^-^ -
#1.1 Posted by NetRyder on 13 Jan 2005 - 01:08
- Looks better, yes, but it's sorely lacking in features if you compare the two side by side.
-
#1.2 Posted by lare2 on 13 Jan 2005 - 02:13
- Also the Office Suite looks better and has some features only to that platform
-
#1.3 Posted by Heyo on 13 Jan 2005 - 09:16
- I actually think the Mac version looks inferior to the Windows version. I prefer the themes etc of the Windows version, and to me it just looks cleaner. Like the slide-out UI on the Mac looks clunky versus the flat Windows look.
That said, Messenger on Windows UI has has become very polluted over time with feature bloat and advertising etc. I still prefer it to Windows Messenger and this Mac version though.
The worse UI I have ever seen on a messenger type app was ICQ's. That one got so cluttered and clunky over time it forced me over to Messenger in the first place. -
#1.4 Posted by BobMarley on 13 Jan 2005 - 09:52
- Yea I agree it looks much worse than the windows version. That massive send button is terrible. MSN on windows with plus! will always be much better.

- looks good

#3 Posted by StuRReaL on 12 Jan 2005 - 22:54
- why can't they make the windows msn messenger interface that nice
thats clean simple and doesn't have a fugly theme like windows MSM messenger
Come on microsoft go the extra mile and applications for your own operating systems like that nice -
#3.1 Posted by theyarecomingforyou on 12 Jan 2005 - 22:56
- I agree.
-
#3.2 Posted by SVT on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:09
- It's because Apple has decent Human User Interface Guidelines [TM].
-
#3.3 Posted by Foub on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:24
- MSN Messenger 7 has a nice GUI now. Plus, there are now patches out to make it look like you want as well.
-
#3.4 Posted by i like chips on 13 Jan 2005 - 01:12
- messenger 7? that bloated piece of ****? **** that. messenger needs to go back to its roots (4.7) I love this thing. no ads, no bloatware, just pure messaging.
and yes the mac version looks hella better than the win. funny. -
#3.5 Posted by lare2 on 13 Jan 2005 - 02:15
- It it because the platform let them do beautis like this
-
#3.6 Posted by jagedEdge on 13 Jan 2005 - 03:54
- I think it looks pretty bad (some of those things just don't belong in Brushed Metal). The HIG is somewhat violated as well.
-
#3.7 Posted by StuRReaL on 13 Jan 2005 - 10:56
- well i've decided that if Windows Longhorn doesn't bring an interface as nice as OSX's with its simplicity and useful features i'm switching to a mac.
-
#3.8 Posted by SquareSoft0 on 13 Jan 2005 - 11:55
- StuRReaL, what a well thought, logical reason for an operating system choice. I wish I had your superior intellect.
-
#3.9 Posted by Foub on 13 Jan 2005 - 12:17
- The MAC version has no features at all. BTW, there is support for the Windows version as well where you can get patches to remove and change what you don't like.
It is pathetic just how much MAC users try to play up their systems. BTW, guess which OS is on the vast majority of the 1 billion computers in the world? It certainly isn't OS X.

#4 Posted by Krankerz on 12 Jan 2005 - 22:55
- OH MAN OH MAN!!! I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!

-
#8 Posted by rIaHc3 on 12 Jan 2005 - 22:58
- (Not a Mac user)
Its about time. MS was screwing all Mac users out of the update. I myself cant wait for this to be released for my Mac friends

- Looks a lot better than the current version. However, It's brushed metal, and that makes me sad.
... thank god I use Adium. -
#9.1 Posted by Krankerz on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:16
- Why wouldn't it be brushed metal? Most major apps on the Mac platform already are: Safari, iTunes, iChat, etc.
-
#9.2 Posted by jagedEdge on 13 Jan 2005 - 03:56
- Ah, but it's brushed metal for a reason. HIG dictates an application should be brushed metal if it mimics a real-life appliance. In this case, you could say it mimics a phone, or that it mimics a PDA with Messaging functionality.
-
#9.3 Posted by mr_da3m0n on 13 Jan 2005 - 20:07
- Oh, hence, iTunes mimics a stereo, and Safari mimics a web browser. I understand now.
(Yes, that was a cheap shot XD Don't get me wrong, I like safari.)

- Quite thankful that I can post my comment here. That's looks really good. Hopefully it'll shut that person up.

The guy which made that whole page just moaning about how MSN for Mac isn't as good as the Windows version, even though it's free... people like that really annoy me. -
#13.1 Posted by dp123 on 13 Jan 2005 - 00:51
- It's a perfectly valid point. It's Microsoft's problem that they want to claim great Apple support while in fact WMP Messenger and even now Office are starved for features and buggy as hell.
If Microsoft wants to whine about not doing well on the Mac, they should not make crap products.
If Microsoft wants to claim they support multiple platforms and love the Mac, they should not make crap products.
Otherwise, users of the Mac platform are actually better off without their products.

#14 Posted by kainashi on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:19

#19 Posted by Spartan_X on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:36
- OMG, why do you care more about messenger than new "PST import wizard"... that's freacking good. now I can have all the $hit on my old PST on my Mac... yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

-
#19.1 Posted by 4g3nt_Smith on 13 Jan 2005 - 02:58
- Adn where might this come from? I'm quite interested in that, since getting the stuff over was a bitch and I could only succeed in getitng it into Mail.app. May actually try out Entourage if that thing is out or is coming out soon.
-
#19.2 Posted by jagedEdge on 13 Jan 2005 - 03:58
- Ah, but then you could just export everything from Entourage into Mail and iCal and be happy-dandy.

-
#19.3 Posted by mr_da3m0n on 13 Jan 2005 - 20:15
- What people seem to fail to realize is that Office for the mac (X or 2004) don't provide any PST import features if you're migrating from windows.
During one of my system admin jobs, I had to migrate a PC/Outlook user to a Mac/Entourage environement. It was rather easy until I hit the mail. I had to export it out of Outlook, import it in Mozilla mail (which stores things in the mbox format) and import every single one of the mbox files back in Entourage.
Thank god I was being paid for this, it was painful. (Users over there archive their e-mails. The guy had 3 years worth of e-mail, which is a good four gigabytes).

#20 Posted by coolkamio on 12 Jan 2005 - 23:59
- yeahh.. looks better than the windows version..
but..
Can't they simply make a plugin for ichat to connect to msn network that supports icons & video conference?
If you think msn messenger 5.0 for mac looks good imagine iChat! -
#20.1 Posted by rajputwarrior on 13 Jan 2005 - 01:24
- ichat for tiger had minimal msn support (like nothing) in the betas. This may improve
-
#21 Posted by stezo2k on 13 Jan 2005 - 00:08

#25 Posted by snigma on 13 Jan 2005 - 01:18
- Why does mac software from Microsoft always look sooo much better? Is it because they know they are being held to a higher standard?
Even the box art looks so cool for the Macs as well as icons...
-
#25.1 Posted by dp123 on 13 Jan 2005 - 02:13
- Why is it that the softies mock Mac users as only interested in what's cool, but as soon as a Microsoft app looks better on the Mac, the softies start b!tching that the Mac users get treated better (when in fact the features suck)?
Hmmm? Hmmm? Did you ever wonder that? Do you really think it's just limited to Microsoft apps? It's msot things, but unlike the crappy Microsoft software, usually other apps both look better and have better features. -
#25.2 Posted by Debugger on 13 Jan 2005 - 02:16
- The real reason it's because of the user interface limitations of windows xp, just wait for longhorn when the desktop will be rendered by the video card...
-
#25.3 Posted by dp123 on 13 Jan 2005 - 03:05
- Please! In the 80s Microsoft apps looked better on the Mac. In the 90s Microsoft apps looked better on the Mac. In the 00s apps look better on the Mac. It doesn't matter the capabilities of Windows, and what the hell is missing in the UI that prevents Windows from displaying brushed metal? There's nothing special in this.
-
#25.4 Posted by Chadwick on 13 Jan 2005 - 03:56
- itunes for windows for example, winamp for example, its all possible, no excuses.
And the fact that the "inferior operating system" now is more advanced is also ironic. -
#25.5 Posted by SquareSoft0 on 13 Jan 2005 - 04:51
- dp123, you usually have some sort of logic behind your trolling posts, but this time you decided to outright flame him as a "softie" who was "mocking" Mac stuff, when you know nothing of what the guy thinks about it. You assume he hates Mac stuff because he uses Windows, that's what we call "persecution complex" and you really shouldn't feel such an attachment to a damn company. Then your fanboyism shines with saying Microsoft software is crappy, go troll elsewhere, thanks.

- Great, now if we can only get Yahoo off their collective butts to update Yahoo Messenger, we'll be doing good.
-
#27 Posted by Gary_Player on 13 Jan 2005 - 04:47

- User tiles in the conversation box? That's going to get annoying..
-
#37 Posted by Wickedkitten on 14 Jan 2005 - 10:11
- Everyone seems to be missing the point of MSN Messenger on OS X, it's not supposed to compete with msn messenger on xp at all. It will never have the amount of bloat that MSN x86 does because it is mainly for corporate use and the reason that Microsoft hasn't included video or audio into it is because they already know that ichat has that covered better than they can do.

The new version will include improved security and the ability to add users listed in a company’s Global Address List (GAL) or corporate address book and it will enable users to view both personal and corporate messaging accounts from one location.
Heading in the same direction that MSN Messenger 7.0 is currently, users will have display pictures which in the mac version are labelled "user tiles". For years MSN Messenger for Mac has been lacking in upgrades, features and general support from Microsoft. MSN Messenger 5 looks like a welcomed upgrade for all Mac users.
