Notebook makers in Taiwan predict that AMD's first batch of dual-core Turion 64 mobile processors, which will reportedly be released on May 9, may start a price war in the dual-core notebook market sooner than expected.

AMD is expected to offer better prices for its Turion 64 X2 CPU line than comparable offerings from Intel, indicated the makers. DailyTech recently reported that AMD will release its new Turion X2 64 processors, with the entry-level segment starting at 1.6GHz and the flagship topping out at 2.2GHz with 2MB of L2 cache, on May 9.

Being in the market for a laptop real soon, that makes me happy.
#7 Audhumla on 24 Mar 2006 - 22:06
Good news for us all, well, maybe not for the people who just bought a laptop

meh, when it comes to laptops, Intel core duo is still the best processor in terms of power and performance. I don't believe the Turion 64 x2 will have much against the core duo, as it's still using the 90nm frabication process, but has 2 cores, meaning it will consume more power. Also, I believe the core duo/solo processors have more power saving states, meaning more power savings that it's predecessor, I don't think AMD has made any changes with it's power saving feature.

Actually it has been benchmarked that even with the 90nm process, the Turion X2 consumes less power under load and mid-load then the core duo, but for idle then the core duo does consume less power.

Personally i think thats a pretty good engineering sucess for a 90nm chip

This is because intel and AMD using different type of silicon wafer... Intel is using bulk silicon wafer with strain Si technology, whereas AMD using silicon on insulator (SOI) technology which practically cuts off the whole leakage current which usually occurs in the transistor build on bulk Si wafer

Too bad it's using a different socket (S1), otherwise we desktop jockeys may have had another clocker-rocker.

BTW.. Is this a rival for Merom from Intel which will be released this September?
#12 google123 on 25 Mar 2006 - 07:21
hell yeah i love price wars.

Half the battle is convincing the OEMs to integrate this chip, regardless of wether it's any good or not. When's the last time you saw a laptop with an AMD chip advertised by a big company?
#13.1 Pdj79 on 25 Mar 2006 - 17:32
Um, isn't this a laptop with an AMD chip advertised by a big company? Last I checked, HP was among the biggest.

great news for consumers.
#15 Vomer on 26 Mar 2006 - 04:43
Is this the one that is compariable to the Centrino "Duo" technology?
#16 Tha1 on 26 Mar 2006 - 10:30
Yes, I think it is.
I was going to buy a new laptop w/ Centrino Duo, but now i have my doubts...
#17 yudi_lks on 26 Mar 2006 - 17:57
Hmm, from what I know, centrino duo is using 32 bit, but AMD Turion X2 is 64 bit, then Intel Merom which will be released this september will be 64 bit as well

Sounds great maybe I finally trade in my tired old A20 ThinkPad for something with a little more power?
