Since the iPod hit the market, backers of competing products have continually claimed that, while the most popular on the market, Apple's trendy device lacked the audio quality that is present in other devices. Subjectively, this has proven true in various test, though one must remember that "what sounds good to me, may sound terrible to you".

This time around, however, CNET focuses purely on the cold hard numbers. While great numbers, in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, distortion, and frequency response, can't guarantee one device will sound better than the next, it's a good place for all serious shoppers to start.

Which devices do you think will come out on top? You may be surprised.
