A small hitch has cropped up in Microsoft’s beta-testing program for Vista: the software giant has temporarily run out of product keys for testers.

The following update was posted on the password-protected Microsoft Connect website, where Microsoft communicates with its core group of beta testers.

9-5-06 - We are currently out of additional keys for package “5342 and Up Ultimate”. We will have more keys available for download within 72 hours. Please do NOT send mail to MCHelp or LHBeta regarding this issue.”

The key I received with beta2 is just for ultimate? How can I install it as Home Premium?

I'd like to know that too, since that's the version I'm going to buy.

If you are not a official tester (ie. public beta tester from beta2), I don't think you can install the betas as anything other than Ultimate. Official testers can generate keys for any of the editions.

You can't use your Ultimate key to activate Home Basic or any other version. All versions have different keys and can be used only for the respective version.

When the installer prompts you for the key, enter nothing and press next. You will then have the possibility to choose which edition to install.
