Microsoft will offer testers the chance to test the latest version of Virtual PC dubbed Virtual PC 2007. This follows the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta program which is scheduled to end on the 30th of March, the same date as Virtual PC 2007 is expected to end.

Testers eager to get their hands on the client version may nominate themselves starting on the 10th of October.

The current version, Virtual PC 2004 -is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system. It also saves reconfiguration time, so your support, development, and training staff can work more efficiently.

Microsoft had previously stated "Microsoft will also offer the free download of Virtual PC 2007, with support for Windows Vista, available in 2007."

I can't wait to test this. 2004 isn't half bad, hopefully 2007 will be virtually (pun intended) native speeds.

Guys? This was posted on September 29, 2006 all over the rest of the web... Just a tiny bit late here, not to mention it has been visible on connect since around September 22nd or so

VPC 2004 is excellent for legacy operating systems like DOS, OS/2, Windows NT/9x, etc but it struggles or doesn't work at all with a lot of modern systems. I couldn't get Ubuntu to even load on it without completely messed up graphics. For now VMware seems to be the only way to run the latest stuff. Hopefully VPC 2007 will take care of these problems without sacrificing compatibility with older systems. This will really be the first Microsoft version; 2004 was basically just a rebranded version of Connectix Virtual PC 6.

Ubuntu and other distros worked fine for me, even on a crappy laptop, running VPC 2k4 (P4, 1.7GHz, GEForce MX400 GO).

Was it Ubuntu 6.06? It's a known problem but apparently there is a workaround:

The default color depth is automatically set to 24-bpp, and Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 does not support 24-bpp color depth. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToConf...ftVirtualPC2004

To tell you the truth, I do not recall. I just know that I got it running. Personal preference though is still VMWare. I've had some quarky issues with VPC that I don't see in VMWare. (installations taking far too long in VPC compared to VMWare.)
